I think it's called a 29'r. :D Seriously, 700C wheels probably won't fit on your present MTB. IMO, strip the bike and sell the frame, fork and wheels. Then just put your parts on a new 29'r frame/fork. Don't forget the new wheels. Good luck

Have you actually tried? My evidence:

I have a 26" rim fitted with a 2.1" Velociraptor tyres and measured it against a 700C rim with a Vittoria Rubino tyre and... the outside diameters are about the same. These are unbuilt wheels, but I like to fit the tyres until I get the spokes to make sure everything fits.

Then I dropped a spare MTB fork across the axle of a 28" wheel with tyre and... it fitted just fine.

Then I popped the 700C wheel from my touring bike into the dropouts of the MTB frame on the workstand and... it fitted.

All fittings were with plenty of clearance.

The issues are not so much clearance around the forks, chainstay and seatstay, but the placement of the brakes. This is really a non-issue if you are talking about discs. Surely.

My fixed gear road bike started life as a 26" mountain bike.

I trial fitted some 700c wheels and tires onto it. When I saw there weren't going to be any clearance issues I cut off the canty brake studs. A standard reach road caliper brake fit perfectly on the front fork and, since it's fixed gear, I don't use a rear brake.

Seriously, 700C wheels probably won't fit on your present MTB.
Depending on the tyre, they almost certainly WILL fit.

The only problem is brake reach.

In addition, some 26" forks - according to Dirt Rag Mag - will accommodate a 29" wheel and tire. In their feature a couple months back they successfully fit a 29" wheel and Bontrager tire into a Surly 1x1 and alluded to the fact that a Salsa 26" fork would work as well.

And, yes, I know a 29" equals a 700c, but a 29" tire does not (in height, nor width) equal a 700c tire.
