Ok, so I was a bit of a chess geek as a kid.

Chess master Bobby Fischer, one of the greatest chess players in history, has died, a spokesman for the World Chess Federation confirmed to CNN Friday. He was 64.

No cause of death was given.

He was a brilliant man who went a little crazy there the last few years, but he changed the game of chess.

I always admired the guy. He was a bit of a tortured soul but still one of my childhood heroes.

R.I.P.

That is sad news. I'll never forgive Joey Buttafuoco for what he did to his sister.

I heard that at the wake there was a bit of a disturbance in the hallway outside the viewing room. Apparently lots of the chess masters were bragging about their best moves in matches against Fischer. It got a bit heated. The funeral director had to break them up. Said he could not tolerate, and I quote "chess nuts boasting in a open foyer."

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. :)

Did the US Secret Service get to him? I never did hear the conclusion to that passport fiasco.

Looks like it was kidney failure.

I saw some footage of him in 2005 when he arrived in Iceland; disheveled and ranting about Jews. I could only think "that used to be Bobby Fischer?" I'm not a shrink but its obvious he sunk into some abyss of mental illness from which there was no emerging. A sad end to a great even truly brilliant mind.

I was on the US Chess Fed site clicking through his 1956 "Game of the Century" and trying to figure out what the kid (he was 13 at the time) was thinking. He gave away a Knight, his Queen and then a Rook. Then the attack comes and checkmate is unavoidable. Replaying the game I could see it unfold and see how those "giveaways" kept his opponent from establishing a defense but never, ever would've without the benefit of seeing the game a few times.

The fact that he was on a completely different level from me is a classic "duh" but he was on a different level from everyone. His descent into paranoia and delusion tarnishes his reputation as a person but his chess will speak for itself for generations.

I truly hope he has here at last found peace.

PS: Sorry for the serious post.
