Just got back from a ride on wet surfaces. We had an early morning rain and I got a nice stripe on my front and back side. Can someone recommend good inexpensive, easy to install/remove fenders for my mountain bike? It is a hardtail Trek 4300.

I just clean my bike as soon as possible when I'm finished riding. I'm not sure that I would want fenders, but I ride mostly xc. Just my opinion.

None of the fenders are expensive. Go to LBS and see what you like. They all practically the same, PLASTIC. There is also a ton of them on the net.

I use these: http://www.topeak.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/store/fenders.html?L+scstore+xbdt8530ffa106a1+1064173139

I've never been big on fenders or mudguards myself. Maybe I just haven't found effective ones. I'll wear my skunk-stripe with pride.

i've heard of people just strapping half of a two liter bottle to the down tube on the front to catch front wheel splatter. as for the rear, no idea. granted manufactured fenders would look better, but at least you could do a test run on a set that cost about 25 cents to make.

this is the best one i could find:

sorry no manufacturer's link. but you get the idea.

it mounts to the seat rails, but also comes with a post mount kit. no rattling, no twisting if you bump it with a leg or bag, and for the weight weenie, it's a few grams lighter than most others.

The Crud Racepack is probably the best I've tried.

fenders look horrible IMO and dont work well enough for me to use them. most of the people I see using them never even ride in the mud.

I don't like having dirty water and mud flying in my face and up my backside. Maybe that is Mountain Biking Taboo or whatever but I don't care.

My affinity for mud pies left me in my childhood. I ride a bike for exercise, not to see how dirty I can get. Ordered me some SKS fenders today. Thanks.

Whatever makes you guys happy, go for it. I just don't ride in mud very often. I ride mainly singletrack and try to stay off wet trails because of erosion. Occasionally, though, I do encounter mud, but not enough to warrant fenders. I'm not a fashion conscious mountain biker.

I took some old Surf laundry detergent bottles and made my own guards for my downtube. they look super crappy and that makes me happy. I wear glasses and really don't like getting mud/water on them. I was amazed at how well they blocked water/mud from my front tire.

as for the back, I don't have anything for that.

my bike looks like a junker and I love it. I also have reflectors on it. they came on it when i purchased it so I left them on.
