Is this one of those things where if you don't know the definition you most assuredly ARE the answer?

Fred meaning nOOb, poser, loser, overachiever by roadie standards?

not sure. none of my bikes look anything like that.

but i rarely wear actual cycling clothing anymore, as i'm usually riding to or from somewhere (instead of just riding to ride).

i was wearing shredded jeans, a Jimmy Buffett t-shirt, and Chuck Taylors on my rides today.

no mirrors or helmet.

what am i?

those are a dime a dozen in the UK.

btw - your fondness for powercranks reveals that you're most likely a techno-fred.

aye - the techno bit probably explains my insistance on disc brakes for road bikes...

...and the fred why I carry three innertubes and still use a frame fit pump :D

Edit: kind of funny being quoted by one of the least fred like personalities on these forums....but I'd never admit that publicly

How big is your alert shirt fleet? I've got about 7 t-shirts, 2 sweat shirts and one jacket from the alert shirt peeps. :)

How about PowerTaps and the like?

If I had a coach then they'd have to convince me with a very well argued sales pitch that there was any merit in wattage outside the lab. I'll stick to my HRM and goofy, gold bricks...sorry cranks.

They're way too ocp for me anyway :) . That and powertap don't do disc brakes yet and SRM don't do powercranks yet.

markhr

what's Fred about that?

lots of minipumps around these days (really don't like them - size does matter) and you know the drill - three tubes, three tyre levers, leatherman, mobile phone, wallet, 2 head lights, two tail lights, hi viz clothing, etc.

Just realised I'm trying to prove my freddishness ..... now that's funny.

that's because zefal frame pumps don't work very well with compact frames.

i don't know that particular drill.

I don't know if I'm a Fred or not. My bikes are quite varied, but my wardrobe is consistent: Jeans, tennis shoes, T-shirt or long sleeve T-shirt, and jacket/hat if cold. I've been told I look like a homeless guy when I ride my commuter bike in the winter. :D

Does it count as Fred-dom if you'd buy that shirt because the cagers are just stupid where you live?

My main commuter, a touring bike, has three blinkies, two headlights, full fenders, and leather bartape and saddle.

I guess I'm a little bit Fred, and a little bit retro-grouch.

you're too young to be a retro-grouch, therefore you must be a 100% Fred.

The counterpart to the Fred is a "Doris" and strangely enough, not a Wilma.

If you visit the road forum there are lengthy threads on what makes a Fred a Fred and even then, there's a lot of confusion.

To me, Freds ride bikes like this... bikes that are practical and functional and where function is more important than fashion although Freds can also be very fashionable individuals.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2079/1552202283_2fcc3a264a.jpg

A Fred is not a poseur... they tend to be real cyclists.

And my Fredmobile...I wonder if the fixed gear makes it less Fred-like.

I'm thinking that of your bars are higher than your saddle you might just be a Fred.

These bars are lower than the saddle but for fred factor there is a rack for my paniers, a bell, and I have since added a rear fender.
