Foo - Itsy Bitsy... Outside My Window!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Are those things only in the SouthEast? I remember seeing them all over around Gainesville when I was growing up there. But more commonly we had banana spiders. They are scary looking but I dated a girl that would catch them in her bare hands and hold them.

What happened? Did she die?

They aren't poisonous. Nothing happened other than all of us getting freaked out.

This is a banana spider. I'd never touch one.

In the warmer months, before walking through the yard I always grab a stick to wave in front of me. Nothing worse than running into a web and thinking, "didn't I see a 6" banana spider around here last week?"

banana spider? If your in the US, they wont hurt you. If you are in S. America, well, kiss it all goodbye if you get bit by what is commonly referred to as a banana spider down there.

The design on its back looks like a Rorshach test! That's pretty cool.

Holy one year old thread, Batman!!
I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth
Like a white piece of rigid satin cloth --
Assorted characters of death and blight
Mixed ready to begin the morning right,
Like the ingredients of a witches' broth --
A snow-drop spider, a flower like a froth,
And dead wings carried like a paper kite.
What had that flower to do with being white,
The wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appall?--
If design govern in a thing so small.
...
Just another reason I'm glad to live in New Jersey.
