General Cycling Discussion - Teaching our kids early

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My kids' favorite show had a positive bike portrayal this morning. Higglytown Heros on the Disney Channel has a different hero every episode. This morning, it was a bike mechanic, complete with blue spiky hair. (Perhaps they go to the store near me). And he was fixing a bike used to haul newspapers to the local recycling station. Very nice. Too bad it was on at 6:30 on a Sat morning.

That's a bit early for most kids...

Isn't it smarter and more logical to play it during when most kids are awake?

I only wish that were true for my kids. They'd had breakfast by then, and I was brewing my second pot of coffee.

You must all deal with a sprightlier batch of kids than around here! I don't see ANYONE up that early in the morning, other than the woman who delivers my newspaper, myself, and Mr. East Hill :p .

So I take it the kids saw it then?

Yes, I don't often watch the Disney Channel by myself at 6:30 in the a.m. Or ever for that matter. My son just was amazed that a bike like his could pull a trailer of newspapers to the recycling center. I had to stop him from trying to tie his wagon to his bike later that afternoon.

Oh, you should have let him try! Then, when he's sixteen and pestering you for a car, you just remind him that he can do all that stuff on a bike. Well, except for that stuff you don't really WANT him doing in a car :) .

Yep, that's how it is in my house, as well. :)

That's the way it was at my house until the kids hit about 6th grade. Then they never wanted to get up before noon.
I've discovered the solution for that problem. My youngest is 31 and they've all got their own places. Now I get up at whatever time my wife tells me.
yeech....now i know why i never had kids. That hour of the morning is for sleeping! (at this time of year anyways)
