Hi,

I'm currently putting an old crankset on to a bike with new pedals. My problem is that I can't get the pedal axle off the crank, as seen in the picture below. I've been turning it clockwise to try to loosen it off, but I've had no luck. I've tried putting it in to a vice, but the flats on the cone aren't deep enough. I was thinking about filing the cone all the way down to get it in to the vice, but that would take some serious filing. Any one recommend that, or suggest other ways to get it off?

The picture didn't work. Are you sure you are turning it the right way? The right (driveside) pedal is conventionally right-hand threaded and comes off counter-clockwise. The left (nds) pedal is left-hand threaded and comes off clockwise. This is exactly the oposite of English bottom brackets and it's easy to get confused.

If you are really turning the spindle the right way, try heat, penetrating oil and a longer wrench. Those are the usual cures.

Put the crankset back on the bike and use a breaker bar on the other crank and a long pedal wrench on that stuck axle. And then force.
