Okay, I'm now going back to bed, but in my usual, inappropriate manner, I have to point out that the title of this thread finally hit me today and I had to snicker. Think about it...:p :D

:( I'm so sorry to hear this ME. I hope that you heal quickly! Big hugs to you.

Thanks, Brandy.:) Do you know that I thought of you yesterday. Remember when you took a nasty spill over a year ago and had the shiners on your thigh and elbow? That popped in my head. You took that without so much as a pause! I'm hoping to do the same and be back on the bike next week (fingers crossed).

I discovered when taking my clothes off to shower tonight...

I'm sure you can find plenty of assistance if needed. I'm glad you are on the mend. Many thanks to all those that helped out, and a very speedy recovery.

Ouch! Just, ouch!

Ok, now it's time to figure out how to be sick, well.

Take it easy, but keep moving as much as you can. Now is the time to take the pain meds, then slack off on them as the days progress. Take them before you really, really need them- they work better that way.

You're likely to be stiff and sore for some time, so listen to your body when it says "stop", but don't neglect the things you can do with reasonable comfort.

Of course, "reasonable comfort" right now means any movement where you can un-grit your teeth, and perhaps even breathe, when you move around. ;)

Massage helps, too, I've heard. ;)

And here's a little fireman of your own, just to keep you company:

ME, sorry to hear about your collision with the rock. Get better soon. I was off the computer all day yesterday, and this morning I come in to find this. Take care of yourself.

I would get the painkillers and just relax today. Your body & brain need to have a day or two of rest. You won't lose your fitness in a day or two.

Thanks ME. I think it was a week later that I was back on the bike and climbing Baldy. Of course, I decided to go down on that ride too. I'll hope you don't follow suit! :p

Here are the pics...

After we got M.E. off the ground and talking again, for a little while we erroneously thought she was OK. The shock and adrenalin of the accident were masking the severity of the injuries and in our relief, we decided we needed to document the crash. We urged Herb to take the rest of the group to finish the ride, but of course, some of them wanted to be in the picture before they left.

The girl was hungry! While she was getting x-rayed we snuck out and got her a turkey sandwich. We figured she wouldn't want a cold White Castle Jalapeno Cheeseburger from the hospital vending machine.

And no, she wasn't taking photos when she went down. (I was right behind her and she was riding straight, wasn't overlapping wheels, wasn't talking and had both hands on the handlebars. It was really a freak accident.)

This is my favorite pic. No matter how injured a person is (unless unconscious, bleeding or in absolute pain, of course) humor helps. I felt dizzy, wanted to throw up and was hurting (not extreme sharp pain, however), and I could still laugh. Honestly, I truly believe the joking in the hospital made me feel better long before their staff actually relieved fears of broken bones. It probably didn't get me in faster since we were all laughing, joking and smiling, but it most definitely helped my mood.

Thanks for the pics, Happy! :)

Glad to hear you came through relatively unscathed Mary. Your head took a pretty good hit on the pavement, so the importance of that helmut is evident in the absence of road rash. If I had been any closer, we may have had the pile up joked about afterward. Not that it is of any significance, but what you hit was a chunk of asphalt debris that had apparently found its way into the middle of the bike path, so it was well disquised against the recently paved surface which is all the more reason we all need to remain focused on what we're doing.

Thanks, Gene. You know, even though I did not have my camera out at the time, the mishap yesterday has now forced me to rethink it. I will take photos again, but doubtfully as many and certainly not on paths with debris. I did NOT in any way see that chunk of debris, and had I had my camera out or hand off one of the bars, I may have landed differently and been hurt far worse. You are correct, every ounce of focus we keep on the road, the ride and our surroundings is critical!

I'm going to have to start an MEwhiner thread pronto. :o

You know how I said I have a high threshold for pain? Seems like not so much right now. OMG, everything on my body hurts...my shoulder (duh), arm (another duh), both legs, quads, butt, right knee, right ankle, right side from my armpit to my thigh, fingers on both hands, LEFT arm (??? WTH?), neck, head... EVERYTHING! EVEN MY FRICKIN' RIGHT EARLOBE!

And to the two people (you know who you are) who told me it was a good idea to sleep through the night and not set my alarm clock to get up at 10:30pm to take pain pills - um, WRONG!!!!! It seems that one needs pain pills to sleep. Oh, and yes, I did, in fact, as predicted, roll over on my shoulder twice during the night. I had ringing in my ears (no joke) from the pain that ensued.

Oi vey...I'm going to have to have a talk with the cycling gods...you know, do a little dance or something...to ensure this never happens again. Well, as soon as I can dance. :p

I didn't really need any morphine until the second day, then I made sure they kept giving to me every few hours. I thought it was odd that I hurt everywhere, too.

NOT rolling over on the shoulder as night is a pain, but I've taken to sleeping a bit on the couch which helps.

Hi Lance. I miss you and Cali. Do you think there is any chance that if I look pathetic enough and groan, she'll pop on too? If not, tell her we all miss her and that these are the extremes I'll go to in order to get her attention. :p

Seriously, thanks and I hope you both are doing well. :)

no, I can't take that stuff as it makes me very ill. Just Motrin for now, but I may give in and go get my prescription for coedine (sp?) filled.

Guess what? I'm coming to lunch with the Panda today. We can commiserate in person! Two gimps eating salads. :p I'll tell you again then, I'm sure, John. But I now truly have appreciation for the pain you must have gone through (still are, I'm sure). If a pulled ligament hurts this badly, a separated shoulder must be awful! Also, my head does hurt. I have a dull but nasty headache even with three Motrins in me (but no other symptom that the doctor told me to look out for in head injuries situations, so I'm sure it's nothing out of the normal). So, I can only imagine that if this is what I'm feeling, you really got whacked.

Since you can't ride today, you ought to get down to Carson and see the world cup sessions-- lots of men (and women) from all over the world up close in their lycra. And a lot of them hang out in the stands when their racing is done, too.

That does sound like fun, Chris. ;) But I'm desperate to get exercise in. So, I'm going to get up and take the two hours it's going to take to get dressed as a one-armed gimp, go have lunch and then head to the gym to ride the recumbant stationary bike for at least an hour. I can't do weights, of course, but if I can keep my cardio up, I believe it will help. So, I'll be checking out the hotties at my gym. :p

Hi lovely. No, that red drop is not blood unless it came from one of my knuckles. I was lucky in that respect. No road rash other than a raspberry on my elbow (and huge hematomato!) and a little on my knuckles. I said to Happy, "Be sure to get a pic of my elbow rash." And she said, "Oh, that's nothing, Man up!" I love that little Panda.

Sheldon, I really appreciate the above link, and now, you'd better believe, I'll be reading everything about a helmet. Lucky for me, Vertical Bob got onto me last year about the fact that I was wearing my helmet too far back on my head. He showed me (by shoving it foward of course :p) how to properly wear it. I had it on properly yesterday and you can see in that pic where the padding is cracked (all the way through!).

Also, I went on to the Giro website. I do plan to send my helmet back to them. I don't have the receipt but I suspect I can find the credit card statement that shows I purchased it. In the meantime, I'm going to buy a new one as obviously, I can't wait too long for them to replace the helmet, but then I'll have two! Here is the link and what Giro says about helmet replacements:

http://edenbicycles.com/page.cfm?pageID=383

IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT
If your Giro helmet is damaged in an accident within three years from its date of purchase, Giro will replace it for a fee*. All we ask is that you send the Giro distributor in your country the helmet along with your proof of purchase, a check or money order, and a letter explaining what happened. *The conditions of this offer vary from country to country. Contact your Giro distributor for program details. Giro reserves the right to change the replacement model, color, or price due to product-line changes in the future.

M.E.

Just heard about your little biff from Shai;

Not the best or recommended way to get attention.

Least credible part, you didn't get a picture on the way down.

Ojai has a hospital???!! Do they serve cold ****ake and tofu salads a meal time?
Are the bed pans produced by local ceramics artisans? And do they use handblown
syringes?
Is it staffed by M.D.s or Shamans?

Heal quick, this excuse is only good for a week or so.

EDIT: Amazing, up there were it says ****ake, it should be spelling out the
name of the mushroom!, Let's try this shatake, with an "i".

Well, Mary's attending physician was a female and the doctor felt compelled to take some of her clothes off to compare her clavicle to Mary's. I'm all like, wow Ojai is cool.

I didn't know there was a hospital there either, but I like their style!

thats about the only way rocks would get on the path, seeing as how theres way for no run off or whatever right there to bring detritus onto it. there are other places on the path (by mira monte elementary, right before you get to vons, etc)

When I shattered my wrist in a mtb crash a few years ago I had to sleep with my arm in a certain position and couldn't roll over on it. They put my arm in an external fixator and it would have been really bad if I slept on it. So I placed a bunch of pillows at my side, around my arm and it sort of wedged me in. It worked, I didn't roll over on my arm with that setup. So maybe if you can wrap yourself in a cocoon of pillows, that might keep you from rolling over on your shoulder. I remember the worst of the pain was the first week, then the pain was more manageable with Advil, but I needed heavy duty prescription pain killers to sleep the first few days. Take it easy, get lots of rest and give your body a chance to heal. We missed you today! Looking forward to riding with you soon ...
