They rule. Helmets have saved me a couple of times both in cycling and kayaking.

This is, um, ah, a no brainer. Helmets save lives and debilitating brain injury. Cyclists should always wear a helmet.

They rule because I can't attach my *helmet* light to my bare head. :p

That's ok. Sometimes I warn hazards and debris with hand signals when I walk as if I'm on a bike.

As for helmets, I like them, I like them a lot.

I took this nasty faceplant once when It was rainy and my foot shot off of my pedal and into my front wheel. I hit so hard that the helmet cut my forehead, but it didn't break. Super lucky I was wearing my helmet, because i was pretty unreliable with it up to that point. I havn't ridden without a helmet since. They are fantastic.

I'm "down" for four. Yes, they are required. Very funny Phil.

8 inch crack in a giro - yes helmets rule!

Was mountain biking on a single track. Going downhill I slowed to pass a few hikers, I noticed a branch (3-4 inches thick across) hanging over the trail about 20 ft or so ahead. Not thinking much about it, I started to accelerate. Next thing I hear is this loud CRACK! as my helmet hit that branch. I wasn't knocked off my bike but my head was thrown back as I continued down a few more feet. I stopped to figure out what happened. The hikers were quite alarmed at the sound of my helmet hitting that branch... low hanging branch. They rushed over to make sure I was ok.

Luckily, when I took off my helmet to examine it, I didn't see any damage. My neck was a little sore but if I was not wearing my helmet, I'm sure I would have been in the hospital. So, I ALWAYS wear my helmet. I even make my kids wear helmets when they ride their trikes/bikes/scooters in the house and in the backyard.

Since merider1 wrote this in her pain accompanied situation;

"The doctor did, in fact, say to me that I had dodged a bullet and that my helmet (now cracked with a pebble embedded in it) saved me from serious injury and most likely, death. She said that, I’m not embellishing. ... I would NOT be writing this had I not had a helmet on."

I plan on wearing a helmet always with the bike. Timely for me as with a cool bike cap I got I was being drawn in my mind to the dark side, and perhaps a darker place after a crash,

I can't tell you how many morons I saw today not wearing helmets....
After what happend to ME...all I wanted to do was stop these people and explain WHY they should be wearing a helmet...

The thing with helmets is they are specifically designed to absorb an impact and they do this much better than a skull. Mary was going about 14mph today when she went down and she slammed the asphalt at a speed much greater than that. The helmet took the impact and she still ended with a briuse on her head. Without the helmet, it would not have been a pretty sight.

I will always wear mine, it was reinforced when I just started riding. A friend went down while we were on a ride, and the helmet was cracked. All I had to do was imagine what would have happened if she wasn't wearing one.

Not only is wearing a helmet a good idea, so if wearing floaties. The umbrella is worthless, IMHO.

Mine is about 8 years old. Maybe it's time to replace it? It's getting pretty funky inside anyway. I see PB has the Eclipse on sale.

I remember reading somewhere that exposure to the sun can weaken a helmet and they should be replaced ever 5years or so???
Cant remember where I saw that, or if its really true...

I replace the helmet every 2-3 years. The outer shell of the helmets typically are just fine, but the foam does degrade over time, naturally.

Why do you have to be painful? Why? And no, it is not overrated. I'd likely not be here without the one I cracked yesterday pavement diving.

BTW...I had a Trek helmet..was ok...but got a Giro Atmos...
very light...but mainly it is cooler...the vents in it are awesome...
But they are $$ I waited for a sale at Performance, then used a discount coupona nd some performance points otherwise I wouldnt have been able afford it...they are blowing out the 2007 models...

That site had a not so great opinion of the Atmos. Generally, they highly suggest helmets that are more rounded in shape with no snag points. I'm looking at the XEN (removing the visor?) or the new Giros Rift. I see REI has those.

I must admit to being the first, but only in keeping with the fun, irreverent nature of the socal site.:D

My Giro saved quite a bit of skin off of my head once and I never ride without one.

Helmets are useless if a car decides to slam your ass at 50mph. For regular face-planting falls they work wonders.
