On the Mt. Tam ride, we were just laughing, because we were passing by one gym, where we saw a group in a spinning class. Imagine the irony, of a group of cyclists passing by some spinning folks, and we're moving, and they're not

Did you "hover" while doing that ride?

I thought that story was hilarious, that's why I posted the thread. I think sometimes stupid is adventurous.. Hey my new motto!

I'll admit.
I just got a set of rollers (with the intent to make them free-motion).
I'd like to be able to ride when I get home from work, and don't want to hit the nice roads (which are mostly unlit) at night time.
I can't wait until the days get just a little bit longer, and I can start riding all the way home from work again (32 mile ride).
But, I try to do it outdoors as much as possible. Cold/wet doesn't bother me, but pitch blackness and crazy downpours do. I'll commute in such conditions though.
Anyway I figure, rollers are better than *nothing*

Pardon the ignorance, but what's "free-motion" mean?
"free-motion" and "rollers" in the same sentence sounds a little scary to me ...

I believe it means there is nothing holding the bike when riding on the rollers. You have to concentrate and keep balance.

Takes a little getting used to and you could end up in the kitchen so I've gone to the in place cyclops. It's easier for eating pizza and smokin ciggarettes, oh and handliing the remote.

The idea behind free motion rollers is to allow for the set of rollers to move back and forth as a unit, within a frame. This makes the riding feel more natural, as if you were riding outside (especially out of the saddle).
Inside Ride makes a commercial set called E-motion for $800!!!
Many people have built their own DIY solution.
See here:

e-motion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaYDZ-RSOTA&feature=related
In the DIY video, the guy pretty much does a full sprint near the end of the clip, no problem.
The e-motion one explains how the work a bit.

Yeah if anything the free-motion makes the rollers easier, and less scary (as far as launching yourself off).

Wow. That's cool. In the late 70s I had a set of rollers i got for free bacause one drum was cracked. Man were they loud. Amazingly loud. And that crack made it even worse.
I hate indoor riding, but this might be fun to at least try.

i hate it too. But if I can make it as close to 'real' as posisble, I'll do it.
I have not been riding enough, so if this is what it takes to get some "miles" in then, I'll take it.

MYTHBUSTERS IN THE HOUSE: you won't "launch" yourself off rollers. worst case scenario you roll one wheel off one side or the other and kinda tip down/over. bruised ego but your skin will be intact. I'm just sayin.
Aw don't destroy my illusions. :D

Yeah but I read on the "Internet" that someone once used rollers and launched out the kitchen window landed in a dumpster and was found with his bike in a landfill 2 weeks later barely alive!!!
Don't you believe the "Internet" ?.........;)
