I'm having a rather strange problem... hopefully someone here will be able to help.

I recently purchased a slightly used road bike (from a local bike shop) with a Shimano 105 component set. The bike itself looks almost brand new and appears to have been very lightly used.

The first day, I took the bike out for a brief 30-minute ride to get a feel for it. Aside from some minor adjustments, everything seemed perfect. Later that day, a friend adjusted the derailleurs... all pretty basic stuff. At this point, the bike was working perfectly; I took it off the stand and put it away.

That night, I wanted to check the derailleurs to make sure the shifting felt right; the shifting was fine, but I was no longer able to pedal. The gears spin freely, and the freehub won't engage no matter what I try. Let me reiterate that it was working perfectly when I put it away. I would normally think the hub was toasted, but that doesn't just happen from sitting in my apartment. The only thing that happened between it working and not working were some minor detaulleur adjustments.

Any help would be much appreciated... I have three days off work coming up tomorrow, and I've been really looking forward to some riding time, not some repair time...

My guess is you have some gunky, stiff grease in the FH that is preventing the pawls from engaging. You might try hosing down as much of the FH as you can with a solvent like WD-40 or similar.

That almost sounds too easy, but I'll give it a try... thanks for the info.

This sounds like a similar problem-

Derailer adjustments do not affect the freehub. Your freehub went bad just after the adjustments were made is simple coincidence. Adjust them back won't fix the freehub, but the freehub cab be replaced.

You might be able to un sieze the freehub pawls. If you do decide to rinse it with WD40 be sure to get some grease in there afterwards. WD40 in NOT a lubricant.

The WD-40 flush should remove any gunk, water and hardened lube but, as noted it's not an effective lubricant itself.

However, don't try to inject grease into the cleaned freehub body as it too can cause the pawls to stick in cold weather. Use a light oil such as Tri-Flow.

Well, it turns out the freehub was completely screwed; I took it back to the shop where they were unable to fix it, and they put a new one on order free of charge. And even better, the owner/mechanic (it's a small shop) gave me the rear wheel off of his personal bike to use while I'm waiting for mine back. Honestly, I'm glad it happened now and not during a ride!
