Hey, I am planning a bike tour of southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia in March 2008. Can anyone tell me a reasonable hotel or B & B in Rome where I can stay, store my bike case and start my tour??
Thanks, Dave

It's been my experience that there's no such thing as cheap in Rome. That said, I stayed here ( http://www.bb-averoma.romaviva.com/home.htm ) last year when I was in Rome. It was reasonable, considering it's Rome, friendly, clean and quite centrally located. You would be very hard pressed to find something less that $100USD per night unless you were willing to stay outside of the main part of Rome. In the city, it seems that things start around $150USD or so. With the Euro at around $1.45USD, Europe is more expensive than ever.

If you're willing to go 'downscale' and be a little more adventurous, here's a place to start: http://www.romaviva.com/1star-hotels-rome.htm

Check out the convents and monasteries. I've done this in Venice and will be staying at one next week in Rome. They are not fancy, but often times cleaner, better kept and cheaper than traditional hotels. Some will have curfews at night (10:00pm-midnight) but many have started extending that until later or keeping the front door open 24/7. Amenities vary greatly, so check what's important to you (private bath, TV, phone, internet, etc.) Here's one link but a search will find you many more: http://www.romefile.com/accommodation/convents.php

FWIW, I'll be at ALBERGO GIUSTI – Suore di Sant’ Anna which is about half way between Termini Station and the Colosseum. 50 Euro a night for single including breakfast and no curfew.
