Someone would have to kill me to take my late uncle's old Raleigh 3-speed. I rarely use it (it's been my ride to the polling place to make a statement bike), but the sentimental value is irreplaceable.

I would have five bikes, all exactly the same, except each one would be an almost imperceptibly different color. I would ride them at random. If anyone ever points out that my bike looks like it's a slightly different color than usual, I will point and laugh at their stupidity, because it's clearly a different bike.

A Hetchins, preferably 1940s - 1950s and fitted with a Sturmey Archer AM, ASC, or FC hub. Well I can dream can't I.
A Humber Sports fitted with four speed dynohub and Brooks B66 saddle. At last one that is already in my stable of bikes. I just need to put the Brooks on.
A Pre-WWII fixed gear racing bike. I have one, now to just restore it.
A decent hardtail MTB, preferably steel.

Three more? Don't really know, but I guess it would be something like the following:

- Brompton folder for even easier travelling
- Some kind of nice hardtail MTB (though I'm so far out of the MTB loop, I wouldn't know where to start...)
- Surly Pugsley

But yeah... my Dahon and Jamis do pretty much everything I ask them to :).

Edit: Damn, forgot about Xtracycles! And recumbents! I guess the Xtracycle would trump the Brompton, and I guess a recumbent over the Pugsley... but that would be a hard decision to make. Pugsleys look like so much fun....

A steel hardtail XTR mountain bike, probably of the 29" persuasion.
A recumbent trike. Steel, if possible.

The last one would be tough to pick. A rigid 29" single speed mountain bike? A beater fixed gear? A Pugsley? A tallbike? A folder?

Maybe if it was ten bikes... :p

If that Dahon is the same singlespeed model that Performance sells for $180, I've been thinking of picking one up, stripping it down, and making it a fixed gear. Could be fun.

I think that would be a fun project and you would get a cool bike out of it--
but for the eventual cost save up some dough and get SS couplers
installed on one of your rigs.

edit: that wouldn't be as fun as doing it yourself.

Either way folders are good. Only folders are allowed on
BART during rush hour for instance.

Yup, looks like it is. Mine actually started out as a six-speed, but I only ever used the biggest gear so I just did an SS conversion. The Boardwalk S1 that Performance sells has a pretty low gear ratio out of the box, but of course that won't matter if you're going to put your own track cog on the back. Don't know how big the standard chainring on an S1 is (mine is 52).

One thing that you might want to be careful of: the Boardwalk in the picture on Performance's site seems to have a fixed-length handlepost. That's a drawback for me, since I find that means the bars are too high. Make sure you get one with an adjustable handlepost (like mine in the picture above... they've since changed the design slightly, but the idea is the same).
