Looked outside this morning saw damp pavement and clouds. Logged on to the weather.com and saw they're predicting at least 10 days of rain.

This isn't why I live in California.

Time to finally buy some rain gear and break my "no riding in the rain" rule, which up to this point has been pretty reasonable.

I'll see all you ducks out there.

I'll be getting some full fenders this week, maybe even today. I also ride the rollers daily for an hour. Not too bad once you get used to it and thinking of the benefits.

Holy smokes! You're right! Aaaargh!

We may have to do the indoor spinning circuit that Taxi777 referred to! :D

ouch.

This may require breaking out the hybrid/commuter, although I have a hard time going back to that now...

Good old hilly SF. Generally when we get a hour break from the rain, I jam a hilly city block really hard a number of times like a crit. That way, I'm just a few minutes from home when it starts pouring.

It's not just rain -- there are predictions of snow for Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Diablo, and maybe even Tam as well. Hopefully, the forecast changes though. Saturday's the SF Randonneurs 200K -- which won't be a whole lot of fun in the rain...

There was snow on Hwy 9 this AM, and at some distance below the summit / Skyline, too.

Booourns. NOAA's likelihood for rain for the next week doubled between last night and today. School starts tomorrow too. Training in the rain is fun, commuting in the rain isn't half bad, either having to pack and wear extra clothing to avoid sitting in class wet and/or sitting in class wet is lame.

I bike commute, rain or shine. I have a nasty cold now, but I follow the Commuter Forum rule:
Too sick to ride to work, too sick to go at all.

Oddly, I feel the opposite of jeffremer about training in the rain. I don't mind riding to work in the rain, but I don't think I'd ever go on a fun ride in the same conditions.
The upside, though, is that I get 16.47 miles in every day.

Of course the last 2 weekends have been great, but the 200K SF brevet this weekend looks awful. Not sure what gear I'm going to upgrade, if at all. I can handle cold and wet for my 1 hour commute (with a hot shower at the end), but 10 hours will be something else. Maybe some new gloves, showers pass jacket....dunno

Tough to commit to good rain gear when it will hardly get used.... guess I'll suffer....

This is why I have a rain/commuter bike :)

Also, I just got a set of rollers (yet to arrive) which I will be making into DIY "free-motion" rollers :)

It'll be at least 12 hours for me. :p

I think there's a rule that the SF Brevets must be run in crummy weather.

Likewise. gah.

I was in Millbrae when it started to rain somewhat hard. It wasn't too bad with my rain jacket, pants and covered-up helmet, but it felt a bit cold. I met another cyclist and noticed he was just wearing jeans and and semi-waterproof jacket (with a cap, but no helmet). I felt very cold just looking at him riding away like that...

What makes you think the weatherpeople can actually forecast the weather past tomorrow morning around here? I've never lived anywhere with such changeable weather.

One down, nine to go ;)

But seriously, I rode a flat ride today, and while it definitely was of the "liquid sunshine" type, with fenders, rain jacket, etc. it honestly wasn't too bad. I even enjoyed the sound of the water being caught by my fenders, it was a nice sound :)

I remember that. I think it was two years ago in March or so. I didn't have the cycling bug back then. Now when it rains it hits me where it hurts.

Went out and bought a cheap PVC rain jacket at SportsBasement today and am looking forward to a wet sweaty spin up Hawk Hill and out to Paradise Loop tomorrow morning. If I hear of reports of snow on Mt. Tam maybe I'll go up there and pretend I'm Andy Hampsten at the '88 Giro.

Seems like we get at least a little every couple of years or so. Not as unusual as people make it out to be.

SharpT
01-22-08, 10:18 AM
It's not unusual, but the snow levels are lower than I've seen before. Only lived here 11 years.

I'm going to ride up Metcalf and over San Felipe Rd summit at lunch. Curious if there is any snow that low on the ground.

+1, if it snows on Mt. Tam I'm taking the day off to check it out.

When I lived in Israel it snowed in Jerusalem (we actually had slush on our lawn near Tel Aviv). Pretty much the entire country shut down and clogged the road to Jerusalem to see snow in the old city. By the time most people got there the snow had melted....

Lucky for me I just got in a good training block riding 475 miles in the last 6 days. :D
The weather was beautiful riding down to Solvang on Route 1 with plenty of sunshine and a nice tailwind. I did a few great rides there over the weekend with my new team and came home yesterday afternoon just as the rains began. I'll be happy to just get in a couple short rides over the weekend.

I'm a real wimp. I didn't ride in. I drove in, with my windbreaking gloves on while driving. It was freakin' cold out there this morning. Don't believe the temp on the car (mine said 43 F). It had to be more like 38 or 39.

Man, it's even colder now at 4 than this morning. I think it's under 40. I ride home at 8pm tonight. Yikes...

Though I guess the easterly forums would only laugh at us. No snow, No ice, No hail. No -20.
Still, it's cold for me.

Don't sweat it, spiningeer. Rain in the 30s is a prescription for hypothermia. Discretion is the better part of valor. I know I'll be on the trainer tomorrow.

They'd laugh at your misery and tell you to harden the eff up. ;) Let them spend a summer here and then tell us that 40* isn't cold.

And I have a cold.
At least I should get some California Commuter points, or something....

I feel you. Riding in the rain with a bad cold is not fun. I did that once, to htfu, and I was miserable the whole ride. It did help with the htfu but not something I will be looking forward to again.

Maybe your students will look at you in awe or just think you are crazy. That may make it worth while.:D

Oddly enough, even though it knocks me out, when I'm actually on the bike is when i feel the best. I wouldn't want a long commute, but 40 minutes of hard breathing really open things up nicely.

My students already are pretty sure I'm crazy, this only confirms.

I'm sure Tricia will have something nice fo rme when i get home. :)

I feel colder when I am driving than I am when I ride in the same cold weather. Perhaps it's due to all the layering, and the long lycra keeps my body temperature up. Hmmm .... maybe I should be riding instead of driving? :p

Its not the layering that keeps you warmer on the bike. Its all the "exercising" that you are not doing while driving the car that is making you cold.:p

With this rain we've taken up bowling once a week to get some kind of physical activity. The local lanes play dance music, there are good floors, and the bowling shoes have leather soles. So, while we wait for the pin setter to return the ball we dance.
