Went to our LBS this morning and they placed on trainers a Roubaix for hubby and a Ruby Comp for me. The guy took the time to fit us and show us how to use the shifters. This is new experience for me because I only rode single speeds as a kid and now the hybrid. My husband hasn't ridden a road bike since the shifters were on the down tube. :p

Anyway, once we felt comfortable, they sent us out for a test ride. Didn't stay out too long because it started raining. I'm going to set up some time to ride it on a longer ride that includes some hills, but I really liked it so far. Very different from the hybrid. Although the Ruby is supposed to give a comfortable ride for a road bike, it certainly doesn't absorb the bumps as well as the hybrid! But I really enjoyed how much more responsive and light it feels. Anyway. I'm not in a hurry to purchase, but I when I do, it will be from my LBS. The bike is a 2007 and is on sale from $2200 - something to $1800 - something.

And yes, I'm going for a triple. We went riding in Tiburon yesterday and those hills convinced me that I need that granny for now! But just wait... ;)

I think you'll really like that bike. I bought the Roubaix and I really like mine and I think the carbon gives a very good ride.

I think you'll love the difference between the hybrid and a road bike. I rode hybrids for years and bought my first road bike in 2004. I often wonder why it took me so long to change.

I have granny gears on both my bikes. I don't use them too often but it's nice to have them for those troublesome hills.

Everyone who has the Roubaix seems to love them. My LBS happens to be a Trek dealer. Maybe some day I'll test ride some other brand.

My LBS is a Giant dealer and it was years before I tried and bought a giant.

Bought my custom frame through them- and the Cannondale Tandem- and The Bianchi. Then one day decided to go to the Dark side and just bought one of those road thingies and it happened to be a Giant. Didn't help though as the next bike was the Boreas.

Only problem is- They are trying to sell me a full suspension Mountain bike but it doesn't go up mountains very well.

There is a great deal to be said for using your LBS for purchases. Even if they don't carry the bikes you like- they can always get them but a Ruby comp is a bike well worth trying and buying. And just in case you are worried about the ride position- Don't. It won't be long before you find the bike more comfortable- more versatile and faster than a Hybrid. Only problem will be the choice of tyres- as with the increased milage you will do- the replacement of them will be a problem on what to get. More speed or comfort.

Thanks, everyone! I'm already planning to take the Ruby on our 30-mile regular ride this weekend. It will be interesting to see how it feels. Can't wait! Hope it doesn't rain.
