I just mapped my drive and almost 9 hours of driving. Well as long as I am doing it I might as well have some company. I have a minivan that will seat 3 Comfortably with three bikes INSIDE. So far just me and room for two more. I am thinking of getting a hotel room for Friday and maybe Saturday. Here is the link for my route their has to be a BF'er along it some ware. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=119+Water+St,+Boyne+City,+MI+49712&daddr=Blue+Mounds,+WI+53517&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.86519,70.488281&ie=UTF8&z=7&om=0

Have you considered taking the LUDINGTON MI-MANITOWOC WI ferry? Seems perfect for you. http://www.ssbadger.com/

Thanks for the link. I did a quick search last night and found a different ferry that was around $300, this one was only $200. I will do some more research and figure the gas and time savings in to the factor. Depending on when they leave I might even get to save another night in a hotel and sleep on the ferry.

You'd almost be better off driving over the bridge through the U.P. than to waste time and tolls in NW Indiana / Chicagoland Friday traffic. Much prettier drive, too.

After searching all the lake Michigan ferry's and calculating gas savings I have come to the conclusion that with load times and wait times it will actually take longer and cost $150 more. It was a good thought but not practical.

The original route and offer still stand. After the 200K Ride I am almost defiantly staying there Saturday night also. I don't want a 9 hour drive after that ride.

Ya if I go by myself I would do that route. I didn't think I would find many BF'rs in that area to carpool with.

Check with dave342. He's sort of on the way, if he got signed up.

I suppose I should at least try, here is the alternate route http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=St+ignace,mi&daddr=Blue+Mounds,+WI+53517&sll=44.73893,-85.792236&sspn=4.237172,8.811035&ie=UTF8&ll=44.535675,-87.286377&spn=4.252028,8.811035&z=7&om=0
And anyone who lives between Boyne City and the bridge you know my route and are included in the offer.

With his mileage I figured he would just ride his bike there :D

I would opt for the northerly route. I've done that drive through Chicago then up to Grayling and traffic in the Windy City can make or break you. I really didn't enjoy parking on top of some bridge for 20 minutes somewhere in the metro area. Although it is scenic (in a way) if you don't get down there very often and certainly can add to the total experience, I guess. Maybe do the 'circle tour' ?

I'm right on the way if you go through the UP.
I haven't registered yet, and would have to get a lottery registration, but I don't know if this ride is in the cards for me.

Sorry "Fred" I did not sign for this one. It is the same weekend as Grafton/Fond du Lac WCA events.

Have gone both ways several times up towards Bois Blanc Island/Cheboygan.
Take the northern route, give yourself sufficient time. Much less stress.

You don't drive through Chicago....you drive INTO Chicago. If you are lucky you might just come out the other side.

...and FWIW...taking 294 around Chi-town to 290 to 90- while longer - is much, much quicker than 90 through town. I used t have to drive it a lot for business. Once a coworker of mine raced me home from the last rest stop on the Indiana Toll road. He lived within 300 yards of me in Elgin. He took 90 I took 294. I beat him home by over 2 hours.

If it's clear than 90 is much faster.

....but that's like saying, "If it doesn't rain then Seattle is very beautiful."

Roll the bones. I've had luck with both, I've been stuck for hours in both.

If traffic is backed up on 80-94 through the quarry, then Skyway>Ryan>Kennedy>NWTollway is way faster.

But maybe not.

I'd still say go the U.P. route on a Thursday/Friday in June. Traffic on Fridays can be nuts with all the Chicagolanders trying to escape in any which direction and the rest of the region trying to get into Chicago for some culture. That 3 hours it takes you sitting in traffic will deaden your soul.

I agree with the post above, the more I think about it the less I want to go through Chicago.

So the Northern route it is, U.P. or bust!

I am definitely staying Friday and Saturday nights. after 200K of hills I don't want to be driving that long right after the ride. So if any one from the U.P. or Northern WI needs a ride and or a roommate for the night or two Let me know.

Is the new schedule up or is that just based on last year?

Frunkin I just based it on last year. Then I thought this computer I have has Google (I'm being sarcastic now) why don't I do a Google search on Grafton Wisconsin road cycling racing and the web site came up. The date did change and Grafton Crit ia a week later than last year. (June 21, 2008) Thanks Frunkin for making me check my work.

Hey Fred, I'm heading up to Elk Rapids in late June, taking the road bike. Was hoping to ride around Torch lake and also do the Mission penninsula ride. How far are you from there?

Hey Fred, I'm heading up to Elk Rapids in late June, taking the road bike. Was hoping to ride around Torch lake and also do the Mission penninsula ride. How far are you from there?

Elk Rapids is about 45 miles from my house. I frequently do rides that involve the Northeast side of Torch Lake (60-100 mile rides). As far as mission peninsula it is about 60 miles from my house and I have never ridden it.

If you ride around torch lake it is around 60 miles and is relatively flat. If you get away from the lake on the North and East sides you can get some goods hills not the HHH but close.

You should definitely send me a PM when it gets a little closer. We could set up a ride if we are at similar abilities or I could give you some recommended routes with good roads and views and match them to you ability. This part of Michigan has some great roads with very little traffic and lots of hills (Michigan Mountains :)).

Doesnt sound like we're equal abilities, yet. Doubt I'll be in your league by June but I'll keep that in mind. I just got my maps from the Cherry Capital Cycling Club which has a decent route map for the Mission ride and the one around Torch lake. The guy from the club included his telephone number should I need any help when I get there.

Send me a PM when it gets close, I could look at your torch lake route and possably keep you off of some hills:). As far as ability if we are with in a few MPH I could do all th pulling for the extra work.
