Northeast - New Brunswick / Rutgers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I plan on going to Rutgers next year, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the cycling conditions are like over in New Brunswick. Just general things like bicycle accommodation (especially in dorms), degree of bike theft, how much respect to expect on the road, etc. Thanks!
Contact Rutgers riders at http://www.rutgerscycling.com/index.html
You can also call Highland Park Cycling http://hpcyclery.com/
for more info.
Area around Piscataway campus is reasonably open, all other areas anywhere near campus are "urban". There is a much maligned piece of forested land, Kilmer Preserve, that is actually great for mtn biking, but it gets little use (look at mtbr.com) for trail info.
Riding bikes on campus does not appear to be too popular. Don't know why, because the bus system is horrible. You will spend half your life waiting for and riding buses between campuses. I wouldn't leave any kind of nice bike outside. Try to talk with some of the guys on the cycling team. It is no UCSB. In soooo many ways.
Oh, there is a multi-use path that runs from Rutgers, all the way to Princeton. May not be your cup of tea, but it is a great resource.
Good luck.

NeilFein knows a good amount of routes around those parts. Rutgers is spread throughout New Brunswick and you do need to be as careful with your bike as you would any major city like NY, Chicago, etc.
The D & R Canal Path is good for off-road:

There is also a MUP through Johnson Park (paved paths in light blue):

Respect on the road? It's one of the busiest cities in NJ with a good deal of drivers that just seem to be in a hurry all the time. Get some good lights - front and rear to be seen.
