Touring - Trek 750 Frame

Bounght a 1991 Trek 750 frame on line today - paid more than I liked $150 but in doing a liitle reading seems like it will make a niced loaded bike. Just got done building some 40 hole Large flange Specialized hubs to along with it - need the right freewheel now. Does any one have any experience with this frame.

Not decided if I will build it mountain or bar end shifting yet - I have been a bar end guy for years - but maybe I should expand my horizons.

I have a Trek 790 in a 92 model year. I think the 790 is the same frame as the 750. I have used it for touring sometimes towing a BOB trailer and sometimes with front and rear panniers. I have not had any trouble with it whatsoever. The frame is heavy but that is a plus in my book. I have mountain cranks with low gearing, 17.5 gear inch low, and it has never let me down. The chainstays are a little short but with a Tubus Cargo rack and Ortleib panniers I have no trouble with heal strike.

Good choice! The Trek 750 has excellent touring geometry and a double-butted frame made in the USA. Can you post pics when you're done?

Yes, I'll show the build once done - picking out parts via ebay right now - trying to figure out compact mountain or classic touring cranks - I have a large selection of 110 bolt pattern rings at home. I was pleased to get some some Ultegra 8speed barends new today for $37 and a new Sach 8 Speed 12-30 for $20. I usally go with a bigger top end but have a hard time to find something
afforable and nice. Wheels will be nice Specialized NOS Specialized High Flange built into some 40 hole Velocity Symentry's which are no longer made. Should end up with a nice build for less than $400. Hope the frame is nice based on the Pictures. Did a tire swap for some new 32 Schwalbe Marathon pluses - probably into them for $40. So probably realistically $500 now.
Should be nice, but will take some wrenching time. Hard thing is always findinnd the right parts. Some say it's better to buy an entire used bike than doing it this way - at times I agree.
Especially in light this my 4 build this year - weather is lousey so what else do I have to do!

I have a Trek 790 from 1990 and used it extensively for touring. Does it really have good touring geometry? Always felt that it was a bit shortish and it flexes when fully loaded.

i have a black 1991 750 as well. the one thing you should know about it is the top tube slopes a bit. mine has a 54.5 top tube(actual center to center) but the horizontal is around 56.5. its definitely a good commuter frame (21lbs built with triple crank and old 6speed rear 36spoke) but has been giving me neck problems.

I am building it up with road bars but with mountain bike riser stem - 25.4, I don't like to bend over on a tour but spend most of time on the top espicially for those long climbs. Sounds like the identical frame and size they call it a 21 inch which is okay for me but 56.5 is to big and 54.5 is just right - sounds like it will be okay, because the actual is 54.5.
