You might have put XP in the poll....
I have had Vista for almost a year. It has gotten better. There are also 3rd party programs now like TweakUAC. Win98 may not have drivers for new hardware; if that's what we're talking about. An old computer won't have the horsepower to drive Vista, if that's what we're talking about.
What's the question? Which to use, which sucks more, which does more, which is faster, which is...
If it's asking which is better, that's like asking if it's better to be shot or to be shot repeatedly.

Windows 98 is the best system I ever used (besides my Tandy), so easy to use. VISTA SUCKS!!!!!

I won't even talk about 98 (incl 2000) other than to say it was marginally better than 95 or ME and they were the worst OSes MS every made.
I beta tested Vista for a year before release and promised never to touch it again until it had a major overhaul, until then XP works just peachy for me with no real issues. That said I wipe my system disc and flash my BIOS once a year just to keep the 'puter refreshed.
Cheers!

I still have Win 98 on a dedicated machine as it lets me revert to DOS so I can play Populous.
given the two choices,
and the fact that win98 sucks royally
and it's insanely
vulnerable to virus and attacks,
and is impossible to deal with and has zero support
win98
---
really though, XP is basically a working, EPO version of win95 or win98,
so it's XP
Vista is not ready for primetime in so many ways

They both suck ass. I can't believe people would consider 98.
Ken you could always get the new version, get freedos or there are dos emulators and play that game. Heck you could even do it in linux too :D

2000 isn't a 98 spinoff. It's precursor to XP. The basic structure is the same, but a lot of features were dropped to keep the delays minimal...including the snazzy interface to make it not look like 98.

I assume he was trying to keep it fair. You'll notice *nix and OS-X are also missing.

I prefer Windows XP Pro.
I didn;t have a choice and my new laptop came with Vista Premium. SO FAR.....it has been stable. I wish I could have gotten it with XP though. My original XP install has been so darn good on my PC.
Win95/98 sucked, then Win ME came along and sucked even worse. Then NT..then they finally got closer with Win2000 which morphed into XP. Then Vista came along and they screwed it up again.

Slightly incorrect. Windows NT came out Pre windows 95. 2000 was a massive (long awaited) upgrade from NT.
nt3.1 1993
win95 1995
nt4.0 1996
win98 1998

In reality, the comparrison doesn't really count as you are talking consumer level vs server level software. Just clarifying the dates :)

My new laptop came with Vista Premium as well, I spent 2 hours looking for the proper drivers for XP so I can run that instead of Vista, I got frustrated with Vista after 2 weeks because massive files and programs loaded really slow.
Vista boot time: 2+ minutes.
XP boot time: 40 seconds.
If you prefer XP a lot more than Vista, you have a choice, go out there and find the drivers and install XP.

I voted pie since XP is not a choice. If you have to use windows, its your best bet . . . but then again, I "Think Different," so what do I know. :p

I know almost nothing about computers Ill admit it :( but Ive had comps with wins 98, millenium xp pro, and now have Vista Ultimate, has been working great for the past 11 months, no problems at all....well except the printer problem :o I had this crazy top "O" the line printer that did everything but feed the dogs, it never worked, even when I switched it out for a new one....twice! So I just popped my old one on there and it works perfectly :D

I've only used Vista a little, but from what I experienced I didn't like it at all. I use 2000 at home and XP at work and haven't had much trouble with either.

I almost threw my PC out the window several times due to ME and that wonderful blue screen.

Sounds about right....ME was the last "low end" windows they made. Back in the day when they had the "low end" and the NT based "high end".
ME was so horrendously screwy it was absolutely comical. I installed ME on a Friday evening. About 50 blue screens and 2 days later I was running to Office Depot to pay retail for Win 2000 (and playing right into M$ hands).
I just saw a demo of Ubuntu - I'm a believer. Holy freakin' cow that's an impressively fast operating system. Watched videos from the back around corners of a three dimensional environment without a hiccup.
I remember my old laptop was supposed to come with 2000 and it was ME instead. Nothing ran, just horrible. Put '98 on and had no issues from then on out.

I'm using less and less specialized programs these days. I swear I think I'm only a step or two away from loading Ubuntu on my laptop.
Windows ME (Or "Windows 98ME" as I like to call it, since that's what it was.) was "Millennium Edition", but they wanted you to call it "Me" so it'd be all cuddly and personal or something. What a hunk of junk.
From the sounds of things, Vista is turning into ME2. The schadenfreude runs high.

I figured I'd shut it off after a day or so (you can disable the whole 3D system no problem if you don't like it or your computer can't take it), but it's been a few months now, and it's still going. It's actually somewhat useful. (I did, however, disable the wobbly windows. That was a bit much.)

I love the mouse captures. I am really impressed with the interface. I ran some basic user tests (got my fiance to try to install it and tweek it) and for the most part it is on par with windows as long as there aren't drive issues.

You know, I just remembered that I used ME for a couple of years at a past job, and it was always horrible. And it was being used on a CAD workstation! Before I quit, they got me a new computer with XP and everything was just fine.

(mmm pecan pie) I don't know if this has been said yet, but LINUX FTW!
ahem, I mean...
Look into Linux. I don't myself use it (I use Mac and it works as well as I could possibly hope for/need) but I know that it is the better operating system, granted you don't play games or have any unique software for work etc.
It's more stable, faster, safer (no viruses because of minute market share), and all the programs are free. There is an equivalent to Microsoft Office (which opens Powerpoint, Word documents, etc.), as well as photoshop, web browsers, and countless others.
Ok, the plug is over.
