I'd like to express my condolences to each of the 5 cyclists killed in the Montreal area over the last 8 days.

The sad thing is that they were almost certainly all obeying the rules of the road at the time. 2 of them were hit and runs, of which one person has been caught. I was hit by an overly aggressive driver and remains at large while the other was DUI and has since been caught.

It seems like it's happening a lot, for some reason. I don't know what the cause is, but it's made me a bit nervous.

However, I remember that one of the guys was riding his bike at 5:30 am, when it's dark, in the middle of the road. It's entirely possible the driver never even saw him. If you ride at night in the middle of the road, it's risky, unless you have a flasher and are properly equipped. Of course, no one deserves that fate, but no one should tempt fate either. I think another one was riding against traffic. The others, I think were basically following the rules. Either way, it's made me nervous.

I actually had a close call of my own the other day. I was going up a two way road that intersects a bike path. I waited for the green light and then was about to turn left, onto the bike path. All of a sudden, this car is coming the other way, just barrelling down on me, and going quite fast for that intersection. I hadn't seen any cars coming when I turned, and Literally didn't see him until he was practically on top ofme. It was some sort of purple sporty coupe, and I saw a young guy with a couple of other people inside. I just didn't have time to get out of the way and I thought, "this time I'm going to get creamed.I'm going to go right through the windshield." He screeched to a halt, and just bumped my front wheel! I thought, oh no my new wheel which I just got this year! That was it! Of course, everyone was freaked. Boy, did he ever have good brakes! He asked me if I was okay, and I was, I didn't even get knocked off. Everything seemed okay, but of course I was totally rattled. Maybe it was my fault, I don't know, but I was certain I looked all ways around and didn't go through the light. The wheel is perfectly fine. But I was a bit shaky on the way home, thinking, I could have been the latest death statistic!
