3rd place at a bake sale when I was about 10. Ironically, it was pointed out to me later that the cookies I made were no-bake, so I won an award at a bake sale when I baked nothing.

1st place for Watermelon seed spitting (accuracy) at state fair when I was about 11 or 12.
1st place for Watermelon seed spitting (distance) at county fair the following year.

Nominated "most spirited" (our school's equivalent of "class clown") my senior year, but I ended up coming in 2nd to one of the "cool kids". He later came to me and told me that I "deserved" it more than he did.

What crazy awards have you received in the past?

that reminds of a school story or two....

I was once "punished" in 5th grade for acting up in class by having to write 20 one page stories all overnight (we were supposed to do one per day all month). I got about 12 completed and my teacher just LOVED them. She thought one was so great she made me read it to the school over the intercom during the morning announcements.

Then in 6th grade we had a school olympics type thing. There were about 10 events and in PE we did all events and the best of each event in every class went to the school olympics. I got best in my class for the shot put and came in 2nd or 3rd for the school.

In 6th grade, I made it to regionals in a public speaking competition. Weird, because I hated public speaking (and still do).

Top in Pursuit Driving Testing.

My Sergeant was pretty shaken by my driving and demanded me to cease the test (I kept going) but I got my man. ;) He said that I was risking city property (the cruiser) and his life by taking the risks I did.

I don't know what he was talking about. Nobody was hurt in the many scenarios I had executed and completed successfully.

That was several years ago. Till this day my scores are still top. :D

Greatest Sports Achievement of the Year award when I was a sophomore in high school, for getting my butt whipped, and I mean whipped, in a wrestling match. It was a dual meet against the defending state champs and we were going to have to forfeit the 185lb weight class. I was on the JV squad at the time wrestling at 138 and volunteered to fill the gap so we didn't lose 6pts from the forfeit. Weighed in wearing all my clothes, winter jacket and weights in my shirt.

My opponent, a defending individual state champ, mopped up the mat with me...but couldn't pin me. The other team got 4pts for a superior decision (something like 18-3), rather than 6 for a pin or forfeit. We won the meet by one point and I was carried into the locker room on everyone's shoulders (good thing, I couldn't stand, let alone walk, I was so whipped).

Moral of the story...in the words of Tom Petty....even the losers get lucky sometimes. :D

Awesome story Chip!!

I played Little League baseball for many years as a kid. Up until about the age of 13 or 14. Around age 11 or 12 our division came down to a tie record for our team and one other team. There was not any official rules on settling the tie, so it was decided between league officials, players, coaches and parents to have a 3 game championship series.

Our team won the first game. The other team won the second game. Final game our team was the home team. Last inning we were down 4-2. We managed to get bases loaded with 2 outs when I got up to bat (does this sound just like a movie or what?). I got up and hit a grand slam to win the game. They ended up making me MVP of the series and I got the ball I'd hit with all my team mates and coaches signatures on it.

I still have that ball in a baseball case on the mantle. :)

No sporting awards here, but I did receive an award in high school after my friends and I attempted to launch a rival to the student newspaper. We ended up being given editorships at the existing newspaper instead, and got awards at the end of the year for our initiative :D.

Also got an award for "best floor speech" at my college's debating society. I recited my poem praising () the works of Kim Il-sung in the style of Robert Burns, Scotland's national bard.

My coast guard commander in her annual christmas awards last year gave me:

"Best Dressed in Shorts Award" "Troy is commended for his immaculate dress and bearing during duty days. He is invariably well groomed and sets a fine example to other , scruffier members. However, anyone who is brave enough to wear shorts, and has tree trunk legs as troy does, deserves a special award!"

This was read out in front of the chrsitmas party. Embarassing but all in fun.

I won a district poetry award in 3rd grade for a poem I'd blatantly stolen out of a comic.

I made a movie that won 'Best use fo the guerilla aesthetic' award. I think it means best use of guerilla filmmaking techniques - Namely not getting permits. Also, we didn't have real guns so we used kids plastic guns and they were all shot off frame with a camera to create the muzzle flash.

I got an A-.

I get extra points, too, since I didn't earn it (obviously), I took it.

I got the "Moab Visionary" award for coming up with the idea of our mountain bike team providing a neutral support tent at the 24 Hours of Moab. That was 13 years ago and the team has performed this service every year since. This year it's looking to go nuclear.
