I just ran to the bike shop to remove the cranks/bb from the frame in my sig. On my way home i hear on the radio that Heath Ledger is dead. I say "Hmm, that sucks" and carry on.
When i return home i have 4 IM's, all from women all sent within 15 mins of each other:
"OMG HEATH LEDGER IS DEAD!"
"Did you hear?! Heath Ledger died!"
"You see heath ledger died?"
"Dude...heath ledger is dead"
I had already forgotten when i got home...why do you ladies surround yourself with this Hollywood stuff on a daily basis?

Just as I opened this thread my cell phone rings. A frind of mine announces the fact that Heath Ledger has been found dead. I am sorry that he is dead but who is Heath Ledger says I. Well, after an explanation I realize who it is. Women really do have a somewhat different idea as to what is important. Ehhh!

Eh - I liked the guy. He was a talented actor. I caught "10 things I hate about you" and thought, for a teen movie it was smart (its a remake of taming of the shrew) and well acted. He made that movie. He took on unusual roles, to say the least. I was really stoked when I heard he was cast as the Joker in the new Batman movie. He was one of the better "younger" actors coming up I thought. Not all flash...

I didn't get all the hoopla for her, either. In fact, that story eclipsed lots of major new stories. In that light, it's not just those interested in the inconsequential fluff, but the media outlets who pander to it, too.

He played Mel Gibson's oldest son in 'The Patriot". He was part of the couple in Broke Back Mountain. He had a child with the woman that played his wife in BBM. They split in Sept. It is sad - no matter what the cause.
But locally, 3 people kidnapped a 94 year old man from his home, tortured and killed him then cut off his hand. That is also sad.
Weird. My lovely spouse comes wandering in the door, "Heath Ledger died."
My response, "Who is Heath Ledger?"
"The guy from knight movie..remember...(launches into the Queen song) we will, we will rock you."
"Oh, that guy!....and your point is?"

I don't agree. People die daily. People who have led much worse lives and never got the chance to truly enjoy a day die every day. People in this country and in others. We don't hear about them and for the most part we aren't interested in them. Celebs get a lot of attention in life some of it desired (most) and some of it not. Why is it, though, that we are suppose to break down and shed a tear everytime a celeberty dies? Are they somehow more significant than the other million people that died today? How about the mother who died in labor an hour ago? What about that 10 year old in some war torn African country who starved to death? How about that 13 year old who grew up in the drug torn ghetto and was shot by a stray bullet in that drive by last week?
Where is the sympathy for these stories? The fact is, we as a society don't have time and we as functioning humans don't have the mental capacity to handle each and every death...yet we are suppose to constantly express sympathy to individuals who have had splendid opportunities to do and see more than many can ever dream of?
Heath died young, only a few years older than myself and that is a real shame. If his mother, or friend, or someone who actually cared and loved him spoke to me about it, i would express my deepest sympathy, just as i did to one of my best friends yesterday on his mothers birthday, who passed away at 58 just 3 weeks prior. Did the world take a moment to stop on her behalf? No. Should they? Probably not...
One of your family members dies and you tell the people here at foo.
To reiterate, you are comparing apples to oranges. The many people on this message board that i talk to daily have a connection to me, albeit somewhat superficial and somewhat insignificant, but there is a true human to human connection. I personally don't have that with Heath and i don't think any of you do either. If i'm wrong, i apologize...

I didn't say you have to have sympathy for this person, just not be a total jerk about it by calling it 'crap'. That's all.
You don't have to go out of your way to offer condolences, but to go out of your way to comment on the insignificance of another person just seems wrong.
And guess what (you should know this being a psychology major): a lot of people DO THINK they have a connection with celebrities. Not saying that anyone on these boards does, but they wouldn't be making news otherwise.

^^Not sure this thread was about the insignificance of the dude. I take it to be about how some people get so wrapped up in the lives (and death) of celebrities.
"crap," I don't think was referring to the actor himself. But I could be wrong. I'm not going to read the rest of the thread to confirm. I'm tired.

Why should i know this being a psychology major? I've never studied the relationship to celebrities in any of my psychological endeavorers. I mean, it's a BA in psychology...
It's kind of like how me having a history degree means to my friends that i should know the exact time and date of every birth of every historically significant figure. Just aint how the cookie crumbles ;)

Just seems like general knowledge and that someone with a psychology background would be able to grasp the concept. Guess not.

Which concept is this exactly? You can't call a dude out and be so vague at the same time, that just wont cut it i'm afraid.
You do realize that there are many many fields of psychology right? The primary focus of my study, thus far, has been on cognitive and biological psychology. Would you like to know how a neuron fires? How about why THC has the effects that it does? Perhaps you would like to read my essay on the connection of attention and the cerebellum?

I don't think it's that people are callous. I think we are just conditioned to expect certain responses .. most responses are basically "who is this guy?" or "why should I grieve?"
Those are hardly callous. Indifferent, perhaps. Truly ignorant, for some (some people don't own a t.v.). I wouldn't expect anyone to care that my grandfather passed and I had been away for years .. but then he wasn't famous.

I wasn't actually 'calling you out' but you are getting so darn defensive so I'll explain.
Actually, I thought I already explained it saying that it was general knowledge and that someone that knows psychology might have a better understanding of it.
It's like saying "the earth has a molten core" and expecting a geologist, of any specific discipline, to have more in-depth knowledge on that particular aspect of the subject. This is a concept that someone would most likely learn early in their education on this subject.
****, even *I* got this particular concept of a person feeling a connection with celebrities in my 100 level psych class.
And no, I don't want to read your essay.

So what exactly is the process that explains specifically why people grow attached to celebrities? You really still haven't answered my question yet you continue to condescend me and i'm not really sure why.

Wow, I thought you were just being defensive at first but now I see that you're just dense.
I didn't say that you should know the exact reasoning behind this, only that you might know the general concept. There goes that word 'concept' again. Let's look it up in the dictionary... hmm... a general notion or idea. General notion? Doesn't sound like I'm asking you the "process that explains specifically why people grow attached to celebrities." ... Or does it?!!??!?!?!?!! Specifically.. should I look that up? Might be a different meaning than concept.
Now I'm really being condescending.

Oh, so what you're trying to say is that people generally like people. Yeah, i know that. I didn't really need a degree for that though. Nice argumentation tactic though, that actually is something i could dissect if you want. Social Psych texts offer whole chapters on it.
