Pretty clearly a guy on a brakeless fixed gear up front. I like the photos at the bottom, which seem to suggest that this family is playing bike polo. This was on the back of the latest Newsweek, thought you idiots would enjoy going ape**** about bike culture being for sale or something.

The one time I tried em (discs) they seemed really strong as brakes,
with almost no play between no brakes and over-the-bars stop.

They're co-opting XC.

And disc brakes rock. They are the only brakes that make you go faster downhill.

I know the guy in the lead, he leads polo on my area. He's pretty good, but an ass and takes it wayyyy to seriously.

Is it even practical to have both front and rear deraileurs on such (polo) bike? I would think one of your hands would be busy all the time with something else - holding that stick, that is - and the other one would be busy just steering, fsck gears.

Some bike-polo cyclist please clue me in.

they are just appealing to the rei jackoffs

^^ keep in mind, the bike may not be used solely for bike polo.

what the hell does bike pop have to do with an SUV? I don't get it at all. Doesn't make me want to buy one, so the ad doesn't work.

Are they suggesting toyota polo? 'Cause I'd play that.

I'm sure if you go into rural parts of the American south you could probably find something. except they wouldn't be toyotas, they'd be some domestic vehicle.

That part pretty much means I'll never see it. Call me reigonalist but I try to stay away from the rural american south. Don't think they'd like my trendy purple jeans there.

No, but perhaps a T-shirt with written "Ride me" on the back will be met with some aprecciation:

I don't get why the slogan is mated with a picture perfect spring/summer/fall day...

Looks like they're playing on a grass tennis court-type surface, jolly good:

They're english, it doesn't count.

And that ride on mower thing has the added hazard of...spinning blades of death. Don't fall off your ride...

I have no problem with that ad save for one thing. From the looks of it that one guy is riding a Santa Cruz (I'd say Bullit, but the front end looks wrong and I'm pretty sure that's wrong anyways). Just something about bringing a bike like that to a polo game seems wrong. Kind of like killing a spider with your golden dinner plate ya know?

If it's a Santa Cruz, it's more like killing a spider with a rocket launcher.

So we (Chicago) build mostly single speed MTB style polo bikes with the brakes reversed for not-flipping-over-the-bars purposes. We've also done some "tringle speeds" which have a single speed freewheel in the back and three chainrings in the front, with a rear derailleur for chain tension and a front derailleur to shift with.

Personally I prefer a mountain bike set up as a fixed gear with a front disc brake and a suspension fork and BIG fat tires, but I've always been an odd one.

Why? Front ders never shift as easily and smoothly as rear ones.
