I suppose thats when running a front brake comes in handy. Or being Ted Shred.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it accept that riding brakeless on the street is stupid as hell.

And you can't make the opposition see that they're being obstinate asses when making general assertions like that.

I've never had a problem with straps breaking but I've had aluminum clips break because of too much bending after they struck riding the bottoms of the pedals. After two sets of clips I know run POWER GRIPS which ****ing rock, no more bent clips.

Thats because real horses ride brakeless. They hard.

How old were the straps? I got the same ones.

Nothing against brakeless, just saying that if your strap breaks it sucks to not have a back up.
Its a bit scary to know expensive straps can break like that. Makes me worried about my $8 cheapies.
a. run double straps
b. unless both break at the same time you can still either skip to a stop (back foot broken) or skid (front broken)

doubles or brakes... your choice
i mean i can skip/skid with either foot forward so i wasn't gonna die, its just a hassle

Breaking straps sucks. Breaking clips is just bizarre... happened to me today, it was confusing as hell. And then really annoying.
my roommate trashed an alloy clip with no provocation. made me really happy to have the steel ones.
How old were the straps? I got the same ones.
Probably had them since may. riding every day in portland, so i'm sure the constant winter wetness didn't help
doubles or brakes... your choice
I have both. Is that an option?

When are people finally going to realize that almost EVERYTHING we ride is designed purely for racing. We can't expect it to last very long in the conditions we ride in. Toe straps break, even the really nice ones. Chains break too. ****, brake cables break. Saddles wear out. Wheels get weak. Handlebars and seatposts weaken. Frames get over stressed.
I'm not saying that we all need to run out and get new stuff every six months (well, some stuff like cables, chains, tires (even front), toe straps, etc need to be replaced at least that often), but don't whine when they break. Some stuff may hold up really well on the street, but it was never made for it. Even if it breaks on the first ride, you are using just about everything you ride in an environment outside of its design specifications. Deal with it. Or do your next build with DH components and wait a year before replacing stuff.

I dont know about you guys but i closely inspect my straps ALL THE TIME. If they look weird at all, they go in the trash.
I see bikes a lot with no brakes and totally beat straps that i wouldnt ride for 3 minutes. Scary.
this is one of the reasons i quit using toe cages. i had a pair of running shoes that had a really wide sole, and a 2002 bianchi pista. the 2002 pista had cranks with an abrasive textured coat of black paint on them, and the nylon straps i had would rub during my cadence and wear the strap out in 2-3 months of riding everyday. (i was a courier in houston at the time.) i never had a failure during that time, but i got sick of shelling out duckets to replace them.

i dunno about you, but my toe straps haven't had the slightest hint of breaking (kashimax singles) and i've been riding on them for 80 miles a week (winter has slowed down) for the past half year.
i've seen soma doubles snap after a month after getting wet. that's ridiculous.

Al, cages break.
steel cages break if you have a conversion that has a low enough BB that they rub the ground when you don't have your foot in the clip.
cheap nylon straps break.
cheap leather straps break.
if your straps rub on anything they will wear.
stuff wears out. inspect it every once in a while.

Last year I was skidding up to this low metal fence to lock up to(skidding to impress a girl standing there) and my strap busted. I was going pretty slow by then but lost my balance and toppled over the fence onto the grass--with my bike still between my legs. The girl was not impressed...

i've had toe clips break
i've had straps break nylon and leather
inspect those straps
i just ride ****ty nylon ones though and keep an extra set in my bag
i replace if they look worn out
I have a friend who broke 2 campy laminated straps in one week, and he never got them wet. This was within 2 weeks of getting them, they were brand spankin'. I don't think I could break my toshi doubles if I tried and I've ridden in the rain with them several times. And the best thing, they don't get all hard and whatnot after rain, still soft and supple.
