Road Cycling - Question for So Cal Riders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was just noticing online there is an event in Long Beach, called the Long Beach Marathon Bike Tour - Oct 12, 2003.
Has anyone ran in it before? I have never run in an event and it looks like it might be a good place to get my feet wet, plus they have lots of events happening there the same day. Also, is there any input for someone who has never ran in an event before? Any input would greatly help!
Thanks,
Brian
Here is a link for anyone who isn't up on the event.

Looks cool. The LA Marathon has something similar, I believe.
Yes, on that date there is a bike ride on Long Beach.
Looked into doing that ride, but it is a little too early in the morning to make that long of a drive to Long Beach from where I'm at. It does sound pretty nice though --- the roads will be closed to all traffic.
This is my first year doing events. The experiences have been generally positive. I do have to say that organizational issues are all over the map. some have been incredibally well organized and supported. Others, well, the organizers weren't too sure of the course. But, in the end, they have all been nice rides.
In the larger rides, I've always been able to find someone going my pace. In some of the smaller ones, I've been riding by myself most of the way.
Some rides have had mass starts, others have been start whenever you want. within a window. Be ready for either.
Go out, have fun. Don't worry about the small stuff on the day of ride. Be prepared in case you have a flat.

Speaking of organized rides, I think the wildest one is the Rosarito - Ensenada ride held in April & Sept each year. You've got something like 8000 riders, mostly from SoCal down in Baja for the weekend. We've done about a dozen of those over the years.....but haven't done so in about 7 years.....mostly due to politics. I've got a few friends who still make it down there mostly for the partying........and the riding.
