Great Lakes - Any gps data for the HHH out there?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was curios if any of you have a gps file for the HHH? I have seen the stuff listed on there website but am curios what some of the grades of the tougher climbs are and for how long.

Thanks for all the input........... I hope!

Thanks this was exactly what I was looking for. I am a numbers geek and tend to over analyze stuff. Looks like a great ride:D

me too and it was.

it was my first "hilly" ride of any kind. dont find too many of them hills down here in Plainfiled. just plain old corn fields.

i enjoyed it, but have to miss it this year. i do have the DD 300k on my to do list for August though.

later.

If you look at mine, you'll find it's a good example of what not to do. The second 100k took me almost twice as long as the first 100k. I spent close to half an hour resting at the bottom of the last hill, and still walked it.

You walked? Say it ain't so. Anticipating my first HHH, that is just demoralizing. I got through the DLD 100K without any walking (came closest on Roberts Road and the final Cty Z climb), but it was not easy and I was in better shape than I probably will be in early June.

Well, let's just say I was a little optimistic on the first half and paid for it dearly at the end. I later did the DLD 300k and paced it more reasonably and didn't suffer nearly as much. (but I still suffered a little)

My advice is, unless you've done a ride like this before, however fast you think you should go at the beginning, just go way slower. And then slow down a little more.

I will try to heed that advice. It may not be easy. I am in a trash-talking competition with a friend for bragging rights over who'll "win" the HHH 100K. He edged me out in the DLD. My riding time was a little faster but I dawdled at the rest stops. So for one thing I will try to take faster rest stop breaks.

I am fairly lightweight and my pedaling style is rather low cadence/high gear. On the DLD, I was passing people on the climbs and they were passing me on descents. I overheard a guy say to his girlfriend, "go easy on the hard parts, and go hard on the easy parts." I wondered if I was making it hard on myself by doing the opposite. Common widsom keeps telling me I should mash less and spin more, but this seems to be how I'm comfortable.

edit: PS, I am re-gearing my bike with a wider range freewheel, from 14-28 to 14-32, to help on the brutal climbs.

If you can climb Roberts, you can climb any of the hills in the HHH. Roberts was a freakin tough climb. And the 200k+ routes climbed it a second time! I made it both times w/o walking, but the second time I was zig-zagging like crazy. (The 2006 DLD went down Roberts, by the way).

The thing about the HHH is the hardest climb is the last one. I've walked parts of it each of the times I tried. But you get a preview of the first half of that last climb very early in the day. Take note on that first ascent up Mounds Park Road on pacing yourself.

The routes are different in the second half, so we'll never know for sure, but to my eye, it looks a lot like.....

me!

hey what kind of Garmin's are these guys? Very cool data :D. I was thinking of getting a Garmin since I'm doing a big tour this year. I have an old one from running, but it's old...

It's more fun when you don't know how difficult it is.

Skip the Garmin.

When the time comes, you won't be able to avoid finding out how difficult it is, much though you might wish you could.

No it's not.

If I had really thought about what it was truely going to be like i would have been much better prepared mentally. As it was my mind was not prepared.....which led to the very "Usual Suspects" episode at the first rest stop...

"GIVE ME THE EFF-n KEYS MOTHER EFF-r.....I'm doing the 100K instead!"

This year it looks like hardly anyone will be going that will be riding my slow*****d pace so I will be prepared to suffer totally alone. That way I can practice putting myself in my happy place.

For me ignorance is bliss - no computer, no strategy beyond Forrest Gump "just run" - and hey, conveniently it fits my cheapskate approach and it's period correct with my 70s bike.

I do remember some guy on Roberts Rd: "my computer says this is a 21% grade!" like we were sliding off the decks of the Titanic.

Anyone else up for working a few 1990s movie references into your posts? (The Usual Suspects - check)

I remember heading up to Roberts the second time and seeing people just getting off their bikes at the bottom and hiking it.

I think that would be a great test of fitness sometime in May. And Shop Hill Rd, which is on the DLD 200k route. I think that one gets pretty steep, too.

Hmmm.... checking calendar....
