So I searched my entire dorm room...can't find them. I was about to go for a ride till I found out I don't have the keys. What should I do about the ulock?

do you have a way to prove you own the bike? maybe like police or somthing could help? i don't know that sort of makes sense.

Is your bike locked to something right now? If so, you might want to go get another u-lock and and double lock your bike just incase your keys were stolen.

Also, if you registered your lock when you bought it the company will send you a new key for a couple bucks. If its not registered you have to cut it off. There is no easy way to unlock a u-lock without a key and without breaking it, thats the entire point of having a u-lock to begin with.

Is it a cyclinder type of lock?

If it is a bic pen is your friend.

I assume you don't know where the second set of keys are?

Do you have access to an angle grinder? Also, if your campus has lots of bikes, campus security usually has cutting tools to remove illegally parked bikes...give them a call and ask for help.

If it isn't the nicest lock, you might be able to just take it out with a hammer - I've done this with seized locks before. Probably not going to be your best option, as you can damage your bike if you aren't careful and you might be mistaken for a thief. You could also possibly get an angle grinder from one of those places that rents tools.

those are the older kryp locks (i think) not the new ones. there is no room for the pen to go in. i tried opening on to see if i needed to get another lock

I miss the days of the bic pen debacle.
Probably the greatest few months in bikeforums history.

I remember that. I also remember stopping a bicycle cop in downtown richmond and explaining to them why in the past week the amount of empty u-locks on parking meters had skyrocketed.

Just hang it off your belt for looks (a la hipster style) and then go get a proper chain and padlock.

next time if its really lost in your room, like you searched for hours and can't find it but know its in your room do this.

Start with one small area of the house you're certain it isnt, i.e. the bathroom.
Then take everything that isnt the keys and put it in the safe spot.

Eventually you have nothing left to put, or find your keys.

This really has worked for me in the past, but i had to use the living room/couch corner.

Real pain to clean up btw.

or look in places where you're pretty sure it shouldn't be. because once you're sure it's not in the places it should be, that leaves only the places it shouldn't be.

my dad's logic. i like it. i don't think he's totally serious, but logically, it works. i've used it a few times to success.

Check whether your titanium seatpost is there, too. You know, a tooth fairy kind of deal.
