Tandem Cycling - Nashbar Tandem

I am going to look at a used, barely ridden (according to the owner) Nashbar tandem. From the tiny pictures I would guess 26" wheels as it has flat bar/bar ends like a mountain bike. The price is $250.00. Does anyone have any first hand experience with Nashbar tandem bikes and what is your opinion?

I bought a used Nashbar road bike last year that seemed well built and was a nice rider -- wondering if the same would be said of their tandems?

Have only seen a couple of them around and never ridden one.
However, on a hilly NWTandem Rally in Eugene, OR saw a couple guys on a Nashbar outclimbing/passing a couple on a ti Santana! A good tandem helps, but it's the motor that produces!
At $250 you can hardly go wrong . . . it is cheaper than renting a tandem for a week!

Go for it. The wife and I rented a tandem in Denver for a weekend just to see if we could work together. We could and we sprang for a $2,500 one. And that was in 1986 dollars. We still ride it. A $250 tandem is worth it to see if you two like them. Then get a good one in a year or two.

Most likely you could sell it for what you pay for it if you don't like it. Or, if you buy another tandem later.

If it fits you, go for it. It is a great deal for all the reasons already stated.

I bought a nashbar tandem used in 1998. It had 700c wheels and suzie hubs, shimano rsx brifters and a rear drum drag brake. It has been very good to me, and I love the fact that it will fit 45mm tires with fenders.

I went out took a look. Flat tires and no pump so there was no way to test drive it. I had the owner lift the rear tire so I could spin the pedals and try running it through the gears. Well the right (rear) rapid fire shifter was doing nothing. It did not feel like it was engaging the pawls at all and was having no effect on the de'railler.

I may regret it, but I decided to pass. The ad said great shape -- but I don't think broken shifters and not being able to test ride it is equal to 'great'.
