Mountain Biking - Bike locks and Pinheads

Hey Guys,

Has anyone had any experience with the Abus locks? I was thinking of getting the Abus Steel-O-Flex Granit X-Plus 1050 lock to complement the big heavy chain lock i've got from Bike Guard. However the bike store guy tells me that the Bike Guard locks aren't that great and now i wonder if i should replace that too. I basically normally leave my heavy lock where i lock it up (in a very visable spot in the city with cameras), and now i want to have a second good lock for when i go to the movies or somewhere else.

Also i was thinking of getting the pin head quick release replacements, so that my wheels and seat can't be taken off. I was thinking of not locking the wheels and just using the chain to lock the frame and one wheel. Do people think the pinhead system is reliable? they say that each key is unique, but i wonder if they can just be taken off with a strong grip with some pilers (or i guess someone could just saw them off with a hack saw and replace the quick replacement thingy).

If you want to replace your quick release skewers with locking skewers (for seat and stem as well) try out PITLOCK, I have been using them for 4 months now and they are great. They are made of Stainless Steel and do not corrode. PITLOCK (http://www.urbanbiketech.com/about.html)

For locks, I would only recommend Kryptonite...

that does seem pretty sweet, i was thinking that these sorta systems needed a free rotating housing, hey presto they've done it. So do you lock up your bike just by the frame without worrying about the wheels? I would like to maybe get the mini kyrpto NY lock for its weight and size and just lock my frame up (at the movies or when i go shopping for 1-2 hrs). I'm pretty sure the abus locks are highly regarded, in fact they survive cold much better than krypto

I have a Kryptonite New York Lock STD and I lock the frame and rear wheel to an immovable object. I have not had any issues with the Kryptonite or PITLOCK (they are stainless so make sure you lube them well to prevent galling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galling)). To lock or unlock the PITLOCK I always carry a long 5mm Allen wrench.

I do have an ABUS lock at home as well and they are good locks, but I feel my Kryptonite would thwart thieves longer than the ABUS would.

I thought this was about some washed up Canadian 80's band trying to steal your ride! As an aside, I enjoy the smooth action and reliable performance of Kryptonite locks.
