What are you talking about? That photo clearly shows that the Dutch are stealing our milk crate technology. For that I'm going to steal their stainless steel cylinder thing right in front of the rear wheel technology, just as soon as I can figure out what it is. Errr... anyone know what that is? I'm going with a vase for transporting cut flowers for now, but the first kid's feet would step on them, so I can't be sure.

Ummm...Danish cycling equivalent of the "trucker bottle"? Pure genius! No more bike rides with the kids interrupted just 1/4 mile away from home by "I need to go potty!"

I kept running across that last picture. Notice that she's got 3 kids plus the rack up front.

Another thing I ran across said that in Japan they were moving to ban the 2-kid bicycles and umbrella-holders on bicycles. (This is a thing to hold an open umbrella, not the vase-thingy above).

Oooh, reading the text... how very clever. I got to get a bigger screen. Wait, it says it appears to be "either a vase for carrying flowers or umbrellas?". So Mark really isn't sure of it's purpose. Therefore, it's still an open question. We even can't rule out CVB's "Trucker Bottle" theory yet.

Shame I didnt have the camara last weekend. I saw one of those three seaters!! With a hang on cycle that's a bike with no front wheel for kids to be anchored on to the back of daddy or mummy plus!! a kid trailer attached to the back of that total bodycount was..

(1)Kid on the front seat (2)dad on bike seat (3,4)two kids in the back two seats, (5)an elder child on the back hang cycle and (6,7,8)three kids in the trailer!!.

It was prity amazing to see!! like I said shame I couldn't get a photo!!

For my kids I came up with a less namby, nanny state thing. It's a bigwheel sidecar. They have to keep running and help with propeling the bike. It does tend to draw to the right when one of them falls down. Also getting the gearing and suspension right has been a labour of love.

I think the Cylinder is for a wine bottle. Must keep the Vino safe :) . Just a thought.

Another site somewhere says that's where they stuff their monster locks+chains when they're riding.

I suppose it's stainless because if it was regular steel, the chains would chip any paint and then you'd get rust....

Yep, my first thought was barf bucket! Stainless steel to avoid retaining odour (just like these compost bins: http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=2&p=10025&cat=2,33140)

I noticed the unicycle forum has a Dutch-language subforum and I asked about the container there. Got two responses, one says it's a champagne cooler. Second one, the man says he is Dutch but has never seen one of those- not the norm there at least.

The bike in the picture is made by 'De Fietsfabriek" (Literally: "The Bikefactory). They have an extensive selection of utilitarian bikes: http://defietsfabriek.us/. The frames are made and painted in Turkey and assembled in the Netherlands

They now have a US dealer as well. He is based in Chicago. I had a change to touch some bikes at the Chicago Bike Show recently and ride one of them as well. They are built like a tank and a quite the relaxed ride (although far from speedy). The baskets upfront are rated for 175 LB and since they are mounted onto the frame and not the front wheel, they do not impede steering as much. The rear racks are rated at 175 LB as well.

Every bike is order sight unseen, which is not as scary as it sounds, since the frames come in one size only. Delivery time according to the guy at the bike show was about 4 weeks, but that sounds optimistic to me.

The steel bucket is to put your chain locks in, but could be used for the other suggested uses as well.

I myself are interested in the Filibus model. For about $2200, it looks like a BD-killer to me (puts flame-retardant suit on :))

Some excellent detective work there. I did find that same bike with the bucket on that website (think it was red instead of black). I don't read Dutch, but assume the text said what it was.

Looking on the site a little more, I find the Options on that bike include "Chromen slotbeker". Babelfish translates "slotbeker" as "lock goblet", so yup, that sounds like a lock bucket.
