I began my morning commute. It wasn't raining. A few clouds, but somewhat clear by the full moon's light. I hopped on the train and went to Burbank. It wasn't raining so I got off there for about 12 miles to work. Rode through Griffith Park up Trash Truck hill. Turned right onto Mt. Hollywood. Enjoyed the climb and crisp air. No critters, especially nice since ME mentioned something about mountain lions.

About 1/2-mile to the top, I started getting some rain. Not surprising--I was now in the cloud layer. "It'll be nice when I go back down," I convince myself. At the top...? Nope, started pouring. Cats & dogs!!

My hands and feet were soaked and numb. I had grasped my brake levers to go slow at the top, but now I couldn't let go of them!! Great streams were flowing down the hill. Rivers of sand were washed across the road forcing me to go slower still and steering with the flow, not the road.

Well, I made it to the bottom and work without incident. But, my fingers still haven't warmed up, even after a nice cup o' hot cocoa.

How are you getting in the miles this week?

:D

P.S.: My wife was already planning on picking me up after work so we can go look at a new car. But tomorrow...?

oooh...I feel your pain. Joel, George and I rode down from Mt. Hollywood in nasty rain last year (about this time) and it wasn't fun. It took us an hour to get down we were going so slow! Glad you survived it.

That sucks, Mark. I've been watching the hourly forecasts on Intellicast. Looks like the chance of rain drops to 30% by 4am tomorrow in my area, so I'll chance it. If it still looks like rain, I'm going to the gym.

I'm not getting in the miles this week, bleh. Lot of time getting familiar with spin classes again, double bleh.

Three days off in a row, now... and I'm going crazy. Timing was good, though, as my knees needed a little break. Tomorrow I dust off the mtb, rain or shine.

I think variety is nice. I was going to ride this morning but I wasn't all that keen about cleaning the grit off (man, I scare myself sometimes).
So, I will do treadmill instead.

We'll be going to test drive an '04 Toyota Camry that I previously looked at but didn't drive. Good gas mileage, roomy. Hope it works.

Gambling with the forecast and dodging the rain (just barley), and a few spin classes.

Anyone ever do the spin classes at Tri Fit? If its raining on Saturday morning I may try it out. Gina is teaching and I hear she's pretty tough.

I haven't taken Gina's class, but I've ridden with her - she's super strong.

3 days of 45min trainer session for me so far. I guess it's better than nothing, although for me this is actually much more riding than normal.

BTW, how long does spin classes usually take?

Not too well. I skipped my Tue ride but justified it because of the ride we did on Monday. I will either be riding high intensity around the Rose Bowl this afternoon or I will be working out on my wife's ellpitical machine.

I'm actually ok with it, because I wan't sure how I wanted to deal with the 4 concerts we're doing this week, having to put my suit on after riding and working until 8pm and all.

did 3 hours yesterday and 4 today through the Santa Monica Mountains-yesterday came across a guy from Germany out on a 6 hour ride who couldn't understand where all the riders went-I had to explain about CA and riders. Today the only guys out were from Rock. The rain isn't so bad as long as you wear waterproof booties and something under your helmet. It's actually pretty beautiful up in the mountains in the rain.

I've been lucky, rode everyday this week without getting caught. I did have to ditch work early on Tues. to get an afternoon ride.

I've been on the trainer all week (and will be for another 2). It's a bummer, too, I'd really like to ride up in the mountains after all these storms clear out, I'm sure it will be pretty!

Went for a nice 45 minute run in the rain yesterday. I love doing that, except I need some kinda semi-waterproof jacket. I may go get one today....

I am with you JP, in fact I was thinking about doing some snow riding this weekend. I wished I lived closer to the San Gabriels.

I was doing intervals around the rose bowl and just as i was finishing up the last one it started pouring. For some reason that one turned out the be the fastest one, but cool down in the rain sucks.

I'll have to look for some water-proof booties and a hat :D

its hard to find good rain booties in SoCal (most I've seen in stores are windtex material which is OK for cold but not wet). Adidas makes a nice pair in their climaproof line. On my head, Peral Izumi makes an ear/forehead band that works well-keeps things warm without overheating.

I just wear my normal microfleece head warmer in the pouring rain, I just I'm just hot headed cuz it was dry at the end of the rain rides.

Buying a running-jacket-rain-shell type thingy tomorrow.

Running in the rain and hitting the weights in the gym will have to suffice for a while. We'll survive.

Do the rollers give you any resistance? I thought they were more for working on form.

Mountain biking last night. No miles in this week b/c of work, not weather (Oh, and the 2.5 hours of angry running on sunday night. I didn't do anything on monday, cause everything hurt.)

They can. Some come with optional resistance unit.

What UD just said, plus rollers with smaller diameter drums have more resistance than ones with larger drums. For what it's worth, I wouldn't be happy with my 4" rollers if it wasn't for the mag unit that it came with.

ps. after I RTFM tonight and set the rollers up properly, it only took about a minute to start riding it.

I got caught one night. I had ridden my bike to work and was going to ride home at 11pm. On the way home, about halfway, it started to rain or should I say pour. I found a place to get out of the rain and called my wife to pick me up. She came down and got me, oh boy a nice warmer vehicle and a ride home. As we left the parking lot and went about half a block her car ran out of gas! Now I had to unload my bike ride it home get a gas can, buy some gas and put it in her car so we could get home. We still laugh about that.
