Training & Nutrition - Training advice for a fit but lapsed cyclist

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Here's a bit of background.

I am 40 years old and sail a lot in the summer (perhaps 4 hours on Sat & Sun)
I go to the gym 2x per week and focus on muscle building.

This is the type of sailing I do http://www.force5marketing.co.uk/private/mps/rick-harken4.jpg not floating caravans.

I used to cycle a bit (15-20 years ago) and the best I managed was 1:01 for 25 TT.

I have brought a bike to get in more exercise over the winter whilst I sail less.

The plan is to do 3 x sessions (about 25-30 mins) on Mon, Wed & Fri either inside on my iMagic or ourside if the weather is nice.

Then perhaps a 20 - 30 mile ride outside on the Saturday.

I'd welcome some advice on the intensitivity of the training in the week.

At the moment I have been using the iMagic and run at about 160bpm and 200w ...

Should I be going longer easier or harder shorter .... ??

I guess my target is to be able to ride a go standard 25 ...

Well, a 25-30 min ride 3 times a week is probably less time riding than it takes to get ready each time. Id suggest a minimum of an hour each ride, and a 3 hour or so ride on the weekends. If you can only give up30 min per day to exercise, id be doing a fairly intense ride of hill repeats, intervals, etc.

I think this is a good point regarding time. If you have 60 minutes for exercise, but spend half of that time getting on the shorts, helmet, shoes, checking tire pressure, etc. so that you are only on the bike for 30 minutes you'll probably be better off doing a 45 minute run on those days FROM THE STANDPOINT OF GENERAL HEALTH AND FITNESS. But, if you want to be a better biker, than ride those 30 minutes and turn them into interval or hill work.

In good weather, I do the ride. In cold or rain I'll go hiking or running or to the gym because of the extra prep time for getting ready to ride in non-warm-sunny weather (only bad biking weather for me is too, too windy; storms; snow & ice). But my overall goal is good health, fitness, weight control, etc. Biking just happens to be my preferred way to reach those goals. So secondary to the overall goal are the biking goals - faster, farther, etc. Every once in a while the biking goals take a back seat to the overall goals.
