This just came through from LaGrange's email system:
Hi All,
Just want you to be in the communication loop about this road hazard. Our request that this road hazard be addressed a.s.a.p. is being submitted directly to CalTrans. If you haven't been on PCH lately it wouldn't hurt to read the report we are submitting. Just know that you've got to be especially "heads up" in the shoulder zone that runs between Coastline and Topanga. Please feel share this with our fellow riders in other clubs and organizations. The more who know -- the safer we all are.
Have fun and ride safely.

PCH Road Condition Report

Existing PCH Cycling Hazard
Where: North (land side) of PCH between Coastline and Topanga
Date: Submitted January 24, 2008 - CalTrans District 7

Description: There are a series of about a dozen, 12-inch diameter (circular) holes located on the shoulder. Specifically, they appear as holes that were once used for poles or markers at a road or hillside construction project. They are right in the shoulder zone where cyclists must ride. Additional danger is that some of these holes are filled with soft sand causing some of them to be naturally camouflaged creating a potential wheel snag resulting in the downing of riders. Please take note that these holes run the distance starting at Coastline and end south of Topanga.

It would be deeply appreciated if they can be cut and patched with road material as soon as possible.

Wow..thanks for posting this. It sounds awful...PCH is so scary anyway. There's not much room to go down and so much traffic...

With all the landslide and flash flood warnings...potholes, while a danger, is the last thing to worry about and with care and diligence, easy to avoid. Reduced riding speed is the smart move, but that's a choice one makes based on the conditions. Some areas even got a tornado warning last night. Rain and wind was in high gear last night...a mess to ride in and get home in one piece.

When we finished the last part of Joy's ride on PCH to Malibu, I found it pretty amazing how much junk there was to deal with on the road. Cars, holes, grates, etc. Unless I have some compelling reason, I sure as heck don't want to ride that part of PCH again.

Sheldon, the part of PCH the article refers is east of Topanga going west. The side we were on is tremendously better.

You've got it too nice out there in Conejo. You're getting soft! :p

That's right. No giant boulders coming down into the road...:p

I still love Topanga. I lived on Red Rock off Old Canyon...a horse in the backyard.

A horse can teach you how to fall...;)

Red Rock! I take my dog for walks up in the park, I love it up there. With all this rain, that "creek" that runs along the road should be flowing again, first time since the rains a few years ago.

Nothing wrong with boulders in the road, they keep me from going in to work :)

Did a group ride there recently. I basically stayed close to the white line and missed all those holes while the others in my group did a dangerous slalom course, one handed, pointing at the holes. Oy vey.

That’s just north or Trancas, and it's only for a short distance.

Agoura Road around Westlake Blvd has a LOT of standing water the last couple of days. There is also a HUGE pothole on the westbound side around the median by the Vons driveway. Even though cyclists will probably not be affected, a car can get very badly damaged if it goes through

Thanks for the heads on. I may go through there on the bike tomorrow.
