It just seems so wrong to buy a bike when you know it's stolen...because it just perpetuates the problem. Besides, how does one know the person claiming to have bought the stolen bike isn't the actual thief?

mayukawa, that just doesn't make sense. for one thing, Matt is a real person in the cycling community, active with a local club and also a participant in ALC. if you knew him you wouldn't make a statement like that.

This information was posted to our club's message board. At least the rightful owner now has a chance at getting his/her bike back. $40 sounds like a small price to pay.

I wonder how much Matt had to pay to buy the bike from the thief? I mean I hope he isn't losing a ton of money.

my understanding was that Matt paid $40 to the thief for the bike.

I'm still amazed by the statement that it's wrong to buy this bike in order to get it to the rightful owner. someone is going to buy it at some point, so why shouldn't someone buy it to do good?

The message was posted on my club's message board and was probably fowarded to other clubs. That's how I got the info. I didn't see a post here so I wanted to cross post with Matt's listing @ craigslist so the owner would have a better chance at see this. See, there are good people still out there. Good Going Matt!

No good deed goes unpunished. Comes to mind, anyway. As good as his intentions may be, I would not be surprised, heck, I even expect, that Matt would be the one charged with receiving stolen property if this came to the attention of "proper" authorities.

Obviously, I hope that doesn't happen and that bike and owner are reunited.

I think it's great what he did (hence, I don't think it was wrong).

I just didn't want the thief getting paid much of anything!

Sorry...not trying to attack anybody...just stating my opinion. I think a lot of bikes gets stolen because somebody can make a quick buck. By paying for the stolen item and not reporting the party selling the stolen item, it just means the person doing the stealing will just continue to do so in the future.

Right... the proper thing to do is steal it back!

Hey, I think you did a great thing. If you hadn't paid the $40, then someone else would have gotten it at that price and the bike would never get back to its rightful owner. Besides, what was he supposed to do? Maybe he could have made the thief hang around until a cop could show up and arrest him. Hmmm, I bet you the cops would have really broken their their rear ends getting there so they could get a bike theft collar; I mean, what cop doesn't dream about making a bicycle theft arrest one day. Yeah, I definitely think he did a very good thing. I for one would hope someone would do something like that for me if it had been one of my bicycles that had been stolen.

I would give him $100.00. LOL

Well, what happened after all?

Did you file a police report?

You know the proper thing to do is return it to the police station as it is evidence, of course if you do that it will end up in some cop's garage.
