Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has toured in Costa Rica? Is camping available? Can you suggest a region? Anyone know of bike rentals?
Thanks,
Scott
Perfect timing! I've got a friend interested in a winter tour and Costa Rica came up as one destination of mutual interest. I'd love to hear anyone's experiences/recommendations. We'd probably have 3-4 weeks of time.
I hope you don't mind me piggy backing on your thread Gazelle!

Last spring my family spent a week on the Pacific coast. The main travel agents office had MTBs for rent. Bit rusty due to the salt. The area around Carrillo was nice but dirt roads outnumbered the paved ones 5 to one. And it was lumpy. Try asking CRTREEDUDE who lives in the central mountains. More jungles and volcanos.

Hmmm, I went a year ago but didn't bike. GREAT time. Can't wait to go back. But, very poor roads. Very mountainous. Somewhat careful drivers. I don't recall ever seeing anyone on a bike, except locals in the small towns.
If you love riding the mountains, it's beautiful. Great people too. But, I'd bring plenty of your own stuff for repairs. I don't even recall seing bike shops.

Yes Google bicycle touring Costa Rica depending on where you are staying they have tours or they will bring the bike to you. I did a little riding around Playa de Jaco with the resorts bikes. This is a good time of year it is there dry season we went in May which is the beginning of there wet season. I don't know about camping I think it would be pretty primitive depending on where you go. The people are very friendly. The Pacific side has some fantastic beaches. I hope you have a great time.
Here is a tour journal (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=3Tzut&doc_id=1246&v=UW) from crazyguy that talks about Costa Rica. I also grabbed a Lonely Planet guide and a map of the country.
I'll keep doing more research and throw the good bits into this thread for anyone who is interested. So far it looks like you could easily spend a month having a nice cycle holiday with some breaks at the beach to surf or just chill out as well as some hiking in the mtns.
