Over the past few weeks now I have not been able to eat, at all. I have barely been managing to consume 800 calories per day. Everytime I try to eat more I just can't get it down, it makes me want to gag. Or it will upset my stomach and I will vomit. I know this is so bad for you, but I jsut can't keep food down since Jan1 I have eaten 19,000 calories, I am a note taker.

Any Idea on how to keep food down. Or advice on whether this is bad and how bad it is.

I am still drinking about 3L of water every day.

You gotta suck it up and see a doctor. You want to be sure nothing is going wrong. It could be a simple answer, but you need to know what it is. Keep us posted, OK?

What's nice is that you've kept careful notes. That will be very helpful.

I think I will sometime next week (going to NY this weekend). The weird thing is though, I am never hungry, when I am hungry I can eat. But I just never seem to be hungry. Or like once a day, around 3 Oclock. But the thing is, its not like I am sitting on my ass either, I have rugby practice 3 hours a day 4 times a week. And am up to doing 8 miles runs daily and 12-14 mile runs on the weekend. Along with cycling for about an hour a day on my trainer.

Strange. Is this brand new behavior? Do you gag when you first eat (while the food is in your throat), or once it gets to your stomach?

You need to seek medical attention if you cannot regain control of your eating. It may not hurt you early on, but your internal organs will be damaged if you don't get proper nourishment.

Doctor. Were you trying to lose weight and not eat as much? Could actually be the beginnings of anorexia. Could also be the beginnings of throat cancer. Wide range there - talk to someone who's got more information in front of them besides Google ;)

Let me chime in as well.......
SEE A DOCTOR! In my opinion, this is very, very important! If you have this relatively new presentation of symptoms, there are too many possible causes, and some are minor, but others are very much an issue that your doctor needs to address.

You're about 17 years old, right?

I know you're busy, and probably doing a lot after school, but you should pop into urgent care today/tonight so you get to the doctor before you go to NY.

Why? Because if you're not eating and working out a ton, you can get heart abnormalities. Here in MN, we've had kids just drop dead during games because they had an undiagnosed issue. Add in the stress of heavy workouts and combine that with not eating...it's not something to play around with.

Plus, your body may need to be reintroduced to food in certain manner. The doctor can make sure you're getting the right nutrients and electrolytes during that process.

Don't screw around with this. If you're going to push your body, you have to be responsible enough to take care of it.

-ok?

Report back.

My fiancee was having a similar problem keeping food down sometimes. She'd eat, and then a minute later she'd get sick and throw up. When she went in for other laparoscopic surgery, they found she had a minor hiatal hernia.

Cole,

Your going to crash and crash hard. Besides the lack of nutrients, take a wild stab at where your body is getting its protein. Yep, your muscles that you worked so hard to develop and tone. As of today your body has been without food for 15.5 days. 19,000 calories is enough for 9.5 days at 2k a day. It's now the 25th.

Does it matter what you eat? If your keeping down 3l of water a day maybe you should try some liquid type foods. If you cant get to the doctors immediately at least get yourself to your local GNC and buy this (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2776078&cp=2108309&sr=1&origkw=Weight+Gainers&parentPage=family). You stomach is likely sensitive so only use a 3rd of the dose you should. If it stays down you'll get a big shot of protein, carbs, fiber, fats, and a whole boatload of vitamins. Warning, the chocolate flavor tastes horrible, vanilla is the best in my opinion, avoid strawberry and other fruit flavors like the plague at least for weight gainers.

Do not take what I have just told you as an excuse not to get medical attention. I sincerely hope the weight gainer will stay down and work for you, but you need to see a doctor.

See a doctor. Memory says your in cali... I know a guy who makes coffins out that way...

No food + much workout = low/no potassium/sodium/calcium = no heart pumping = no pulse/blood pressure = DEAD

and all off those low electrolyte conditions COULD cause you to have difficulty eating making the condition worse.

Today I am going to try a new technique on eating, just eating small bits and small meals like 6 times a day. It seems to work well, so far I have eaten two apples, a mango, one of my protein shakes and some oatmeal. And I am making a piece of toast right now. I think I might just have to retrain my body on when I should, maybe its just gotten used to not having a ton of food and works very efficiently with the nutrients its getting. I am also a vegetarian, so I get most of my protein from shakes.

I am also still technically a clyde because I am 6'4, but I am down at around 175-180.

You need to go see a doctor. Part of being an athlete is to listen to your body and to train smart.

Do me a favor. The nurse line of your insurance is free. Just call and ask them. You asked for our advice and now you have us worried. I'll even get you the number if you tell me who your provider is.

Good for you. Incidentally, 6 foot 4 and 175 pounds is extremely unhealthy, especially for someone who hasn't finished growing yet.

As for the appetite disappearing, that happens in cases of starvation. Which is what you are doing to yourself.

incorrect. 6'4" 175 is not unhealthy. what, he has to be fat to be healthy ?

you need 'all' the information before you can say that.

You may wish to consult a weight chart and rethink that. At 175 he's less than the recommend weight. Plus, he's 16. He's not done growing yet. If he'd 'topped out', that would be one thing, but he might grow a bit more.

175 at 6'4" is not unhealthy, unless he is skin and bone at 175.

Even using the Generic BMI charting that is a 21 BMI. At 6'3" to be out of the overweight and into normal, I have to be under 195 according to the BMI. I would have to be at 152 to be in the underweight catagory.

I was 6'3" at 17 and was at 170. I was dunking a basketball two hands behind my head. I was not skinny, but I was not strong either. I was not unhealthy, and actually needed to lose fat from my body then. Even growing children can still use the BMI chart as something to use as a general guideline. Without seeing pictures of him, I would hate to guess, but no, I really don't think his weight is anywhere near an unhealthy stage. Especially since he seems to be very active.

Just woke up, the doctor has a few thoughts and ran some blood tests. He said I should try to start increasing my daily intake up to about 1500. He has a feeling that my body just processes exceptionally efficiently, which is why though I never overate and exercised regularly I gained weight during my childhood.

Yesterday I managed to get 1600 calories in! Just eating slowly all day.

He also prescribed me some vitamins to take as the labs will take a few days and he just wants to make sure. He said my all my vitals were in excellent range, and I didn't have any of the signs of an illness. If all my labs come back in a positive range he is just going to recommend I eat 1500 calories and that my body just processes food very efficiently.

Just wanted to add that i'm not a believer in a vegeterian diet. I think most people eat FAR too much meat, but so far all the people I know who eat vegetarian have some health issues. All of them. If it's by choice, i'd suggest slipping in some small amount of meat now and then into your otherwise vegetarian diet. Humans seem like they were sort've evolved to eat mostly vegetables with supplements of animal foods here and there; some of the cultures in other parts of the world that pride themselves on vegetarianism develop health issues when they arrive in places where there aren't things like bugs occasionally hiding in the rice. Just that tiny bit is enough, and when their diet actually does go pure, they go downhill.

My sister is vegetarian, and gave her 3 boys the choice of whether they want to eat meat or not.

One eats a little meat, one is vegetarian, and one is vegan. They have never even had a cold, although the youngest got mumps. The oldest is 16, the middle one is 14 and the youngest is 6. They are all gorgeous in a really healthy sort of way, with bright, clear eyes. They're all mentally well adjusted, with the oldest one in college and the younger one taking college classes. My sister is a nutritionist, though, so she really knows what she's doing when it comes to food, and she spends a fortune on organic products and has moved to a completely raw diet in the past few years. It takes a lot of organization to eat like that.

Anyway, I'm just presenting a counterpoint. I'm not vegetarian, although I was for a couple years after seeing a meat plant documentary. Then one day, I was walking by a steak house, and my knees went weak. I have to say, though, that for whatever reason, that period of vegetarian eating was the period in my life where I felt most healthy.

I am not wanting to hijack this thread, but I am not a vegetarian and I have just started reading more about it. But, if you pay attention to what you are eating and making sure you have enough of everything you could easily be extremely healthy being a vegetarian, and not have the problems that a very large percentage of the United States is and that is overweight, obese, and have many, many health problems. There is also a book "The China Study" that shows that and much more. I have reduced my intake of meat, but I am not there yet.

Is it me or does this advice not make sense. 1600 calories does not seem like a whole lot for someone who is as active as you are. I have never heard of someone "processing food very efficiently." If your labs come back normal and your problems still continue I would suggest seeing a specialist and getting and MRI.

How is your stress level? A friend of mine has a lot of stomach issues and he stresses himself out a lot. Are you ever exercising? Could your body need a few days break from it?

I think this is a good thread for all of us to remind ourselves to listen to our bodies.
