Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Am I Spending too much money on this bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So i bought the orange IRO angus frame b/c i liked the color and i really like the way quill stems look on threaded headsets and stuff.
So as of now, i have the frame/fork, tange headset, nitto jaguar stem, b125 bars, and sugino RD cranks. so thats already like $525.
So i've calculated the other parts i want to buy for the bike, the most expensive of which include open pro wheelset, rolls saddle, dura ace hubs, amongst other things. All this will total to around $900.
I know its really up to me on how much i want to spend on my bike, and i'm sure i'm going to be happy with the bike once i'm done building it up. But i just wanted to get an opinion on whether or not its just plain ridiculous to spend $1000+ on a $325 frameset. I know my friends/family that know nothing about bikes think i'm ********.....oh well, i figure i make money to spend it, so I might as well spend it on something i really like, as opposed to getting drunk and going out or something like that.

no its fine. and when ur done with that frame set and want to upgrade, u can put ur 1000 parts on ur upgraded frame. my frames generally have been in the 500 area and the parts with wheels in the 1000.

Spend your money on what you want. Forget what everyone else thinks. Make sure you write down what you spend and know your products in regard to quality, msrp, and reviews; otherwise, you could end up spending more than you need to.
spend as much money as humanly possible on your bike and then ride the **** out of it.
Make sure you don't write down what you spendFixed.
I really don't want to know what mine ended up costing. It started out being a budget build. If I did the math, I'd see how much I failed.
That said, I put a King headset on a group buy IRO. You could be doing worse.
i wrote down everything i was spending on my new build and i had to lay down afterwards

If you're traditional Chinese (assuming you are Chinese), yes, any amount over $300 on a new bike is considered ridiculous! LOL. Get used to it. Since you're asking on a bike forum, of course we're going to tell you to happily spend away! :)
Oh, if it makes you feel better, you can dig up old threads on how much people spent on their SS/FG setups...

If you want to cheer yourself up, if you use the bike for commuting, you'll probably make up the money not spending it on gas in a couple months.

Hrm, I think that is a lot for a mediocre frame but like others have said, you can always transfer the parts over to another frame. Personally, I think that if you invest in a good set of wheels you will always come out ahead because frames come and go.
Like my GTB. I am getting a bit tired of it and I'm looking for something steel now so I will just transfer everything over to whatever frame I decide on and sell the GTB, likely getting more money now than what I paid for it, heheheh ;)
I didn't read the post but the answer is always No.

From what i've seen and read, frame set costs of a build are about 1/3 the cost of most bike builds.
If it makes you feel any better it's a good thing you're not a roadie, besides buying frames, they have to buy gears, which i'm sure can add up pretty quickly, then again they also have to buy all that freaking lycra to match :P
You are still coming out leaps and bounds ahead of the roadies :P

I spent $1000 on my pista and it still looks stock! It's quite easy to do with $120 saddles and $80 seatposts, etc... Go for it.

yeah, but roadie parts can be cheap b/c there is so much around and you can always find deals. to the OP - you can always downgrade the hubs - i know i would just get formulas/dimensions if you only have one bike. then get dura ace hubs when it is your second wheelset so you can treat them nicely.

If you are paying cash and can afford it, no.
If you are using credit, have other obligations and won't be able to pay it off in a reasonable amount of time, yes.

If you're tradition Chinese you can spend $7 and get the nicest dinner you can buy in your country including alcohol.

Ha, I spent $25 on a Peugeot mixte frame and built a $500 bike out of it.
I'm building a road bike using a $175 dollar Pinarello frame. It'll cost over a grand when I'm done with it. New paintjob alone will run $300-400.
Just because the frame is the biggest part of the bike doesn't mean it should be the most expensive. I think that's what throws a lot of people off when they start adding up component prices.

how much you spend on any project to me is about:
1) am I ever going to actually sell it?
and then
2)how much will someone actually pay for it after me (NOT how much is it worth)
this happens in restoring anything: cars, motorcycles, and bicycles are no exception
I have a 1967 mustang with only 130K original miles, and just NO RUST AT ALL ANYWHERE, which is unusual for mustangs of that vintage, the title is salvaged so it's never going to be worth much more than about $3500, as opposed to a non salvaged stang in the same condition would fetch upwards of 15K.
I have probably got about $22,000 into that car in total with repairs and modifications over the years, but to me, it's all good, BECAUSE I'M NEVER EVER EVER SELLING IT.
my motobacon fixie conversion cost only $200 in total, and I could sell it after the custom paint job for more than $450 if I wanted to, but again I like it so much, I wont ever sell it, so I'll probably start getting higher end parts for it (like better hubs and a quality headset)
the point is spend according to a plan if your worried about making your money back, or if you don't want to spend over what the thing is worth (remember not WORTH, it's what someone will PAY) and if you just want to ride, spend as much as you want.

please show us a picture of your road conversion and we will tell you how much you could get for it. $450 seems a bit high.

most road conversions don't have gold leafed lugs, and glass like british racing green urethane paint jobs with hand painted lettering and stripes, not to mention a re-tapped bottom bracket (takes standard 68mm sealed BB's now)
won't be painted till spring,......(you can't do good 4 or 5 layer custom paint jobs when it's wet out)
and $450 is quite a reasonable asking price for a good conversion with quality components, built by a certified technician,...I'd take $400 cash. (and don't forget this is the SF bay area, not bakersfield)
this is the kind of paintwork I do:

and:

the point was not trying to start a "whats worth what" argument, the point was: figure out what you want from the thing (sell or no) then spend accordingly, and don't get all stressed out about spending more than the thing is worth if you just want to ride and enjoy the thing (which is why we do this remember?)
but I see some of you just like to start arguments on the internet, and you know what they say about that:

actually i would still like to see a picture of a nice road conversion since most are done on the cheap, but i guess you could just call me ******** and be done with it.

Spend your money on what you want. Forget what everyone else thinks. Make sure you write down what you spend, that way you can explain it when your wife busts your ass for blowing the kids college money.
