Hey Gang.
Anyone want to join me for some hill intervals on New Port Coast this Saturday (1/26) morning. Rain or sunshine?
I'll be doing 8 repeats of different intensities: z3/4, and z2/3.

We'd be up for that some Sunday. Saturdays are tough, but sometimes doable. Keep us posted if you do it again. We're training for KOM, and need the climbing, and could benefit from the motivation of having new rider along.
The last two Sundays we did NC 4 times (3 times from the coast, once from Bonita Canyon), 2 times (each) Ridge Park and Vista Ridge, then down to Laguna for Park Ave, which we did twice. Then up NC the last time and home.

Well I am there almost every Saturday just chugging along at my pace (Usually in NorCal BF wind vest). Gets kind of boring, but iPOD helps. :) I usually climb it from PCH side. I tried other climbs, but they are steeper and shorter. So I prefer NC. Although it is getting a bit short. :(

You should get out and do Silverado (~5 miles), Modjeska, Trabuco/Live Oak. None of them are that long, but they're longer than the 1.5 mile Newporst Coast, and it's a change of scenery.

I tried Silverado and I think Modjeska. They are really not sustained climbs. Nice rides thought. Will check out Trabuco/Live Oak. The climb starts from Santiago Canyon?
Thanks.

The best way to do Trabuco/Live Oak is the way Como Long goes through. Up El Toro, Right on Santa Margarita Parkway, Left on Plano Trabuco, spits you out at Cook's Corner, hang a right to go through Santiago Canyon, or straight puts you back down El Toro. For a steady climb = or >5%, Newport Coast is the sensible choice, it just gets to feel like work instead of fun, however I'm still out there once a week going up and down, up and down ;)

Yep, I know what you mean. Thus my offer for people to join me. Although I think you are a bit too fast for me. :)
As a side note. The new traffic light is really annoying. It's almost always green now, but once they build those overpriced homes it will really suck. :(

One thing to try, especially on weekends. At the top, make a left on to Pelican Hill. This loops back almost to the bottom of Newport Coast (when going up NP, it's the first light). It breaks up the monotony a little bit. I used to always do this, but the weekday morning construction traffic ruins it. Right now I doubt I'm too fast for very many.
Hi,
This sounds like something less than fun, but I need to do something like this for fitness (fitness<>fun). ;)
Unfortunately, I can't go tomorrow (Saturday) but may be able to go the following week. Keep us posted as to when you are doing this as I don't have the personal motivation to do this on my own like you young guys. :) BTW, what time do you usually start?

I usually leave my apartment around 9 am, but can do it sooner.

Great advice. I always look down that street from NC and wonder. Anything that breaks the monotony, even a little, will be welcomed.

Excellent. No doubt we'll be doing some Saturday training rides as KOM approaches. We'll look for you. Look for us, as you pass by!
It was good to see you out there today Alex. (It is Alex, right?) No repeats for me today, just the climb up from Bonita. I did get 99.6 miles in though...so close. ;)

Brandy, keep it up, keep working real hard and I am sure you can complete a century one day :D
I just noticed you have a triple on your radar this year, very cool....

Thanks Thomson. I have faith that I'll make it someday. ;)
Oh...and we'll see how cool that Triple is when I'm out there. I'm fairly certain I won't be thinking that at the time. :p

Yep, Alex. 100 miles before lunch, wow that takes a lot of dedication!
Since I moved to SoCal I got used to see Ferarries, Lamborgenies, or other super cars, but today I saw a Batmans Car! Not the replica from recent movies, or old as far as I can tell. I never seen that model of a car before. It was black, had batman symbols on the side and bunch of other stuff. That grabbed my attention.
I also saw a guy doing hill intervals on a fixie, with baby trailer. Very interesting work out.

I was there today. 39 X 25 is definitely not small enough to get me up that hill, I redlined all the way up...

We may have crossed paths with you today, Alex. Melissa and I were out there from 12:00 until around 3:30pm. Got 5K of climbing in, just on NC and the two Ridges.
Up and freakin' down. Tedious, but worth it.
I think I saw the guy with the baby trailer. He was on the sidewalk, right?

Yep. Pretty kool. Although he was on a fixie turning pedals at like 50rpm. That can't be good for the knees. I was in black (well very dark blue) and yellow NorCal BF Jersey. I think I was heading home around 12.
Taking the alternative way done definitely broke up the monotony. Thanks for suggesting it OCRoadie.

I didn't see the guy until late in our ride, so unless he was doing repeats, with baby in tow, it wasn't the same guy....

I saw that guy too, towing the child trailer on the sidewalk. Even with that extra weight, he still beat me up the hill :(
