Fifty Plus (50+) - So what bike parts are you going to buy with the proposed "Rebate"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's going to be up to us to spur the economy so we have to spend it. I know some of you have probably already figured out what you're planning to spend it on. Whatca' thinking???

I've already been discussing my ideas in the "New Bike" thread.

Starting to think seriously about having a bike built to my specs, perhaps on a Gunnar Rock Tour frame.

But that is this week, who knows about next week.

Concept is that it would give me a comfortable bike with better performance to pair with my recumbent, which is more of a cruiser.

Well, I reckon we're borrowing the money from China to pay for the "rebate," so I'm gonna go to WalMart and buy some Chinese made crap that I'll toss into a landfill before the end of the year. Then, I'll hand the bill for the rebate to the next generation with a hi-dee-hi-yo-silver--and hope they don't murder me in my sleep when they realize how we've totally screwed them. That's my plan.

With an average price of about $25 for each garage sale bike, I'm hoping to find a few more of these little gems.

I was concerned that I too thought of this question after hearing about the rebate...I feel a little guilty about not telling my 3 kids about their $300 each...at least the wife smiled and asked "so, what bike are you going to buy?"

No--- Spend it and then sue the Government for not paying you if you don't get it. At least you will make the lawyers rich that way.

Others have noted this too:
the only way this proposed rebate is going to really provide a boost to our economy is-
-- if the rebate is used on a product "Made in the USA".

Don't forget; the rebates will cause the government to go further into debt and that debt will be financed by the Chinese; so even if you "buy American" it is still a plan that will benefit another country more than the US.

Is rather odd. I thought I'd buy services locally. That generally spurs the economy.

I'd rather see $150B put into infrastructure maintenance and improvement. That type of investment does pay dividends, putting money primarily into domestic pockets.

Seems to be software. Just a matter of using information to accomplish things. We have unemployment, but when I look around there's plenty of things that need doing. Simply need to connect those things up. We have sick people who can't get treatment. And so on. Pretty silly.

We're donating half to local charities and putting the rest in our pension plan. I've always felt that I was to be a citizen first and a consumer second, and despite what the government might suggest, they are not the same thing.

If I receive anything I'll be saving it for my retirement. Our company is in the process of outsourcing and I think I'll be retiring some time after May of this year:)

Those of us who are retired and no longer work for a living get zip, zero, nada. Of course, I hardly pay any taxes so I guess that's fair.

I was wondering how to finance the new Cervelo. I have my answer. As JT pointed out, we are borrowing the money from the Chinese and other international sources, I might as well buy a Chinese made frame, Canadian engineering and Japanese components.:p

Maybe I will stay with Trek and and least get American engineering and frame manufacturing.;)

I just ordered some new rims to lace onto the 105 hubs for my retro grouch bike. They are Velocity Aeroheads, off center for the rear. I think that I'm going to go old school and use bees wax for a spoke thread fixative.

My wheels don't really need to be rebuilt, I'm just becoming bored and need a project.

I guess this fits the topic because this is the bike that I'm planning to take on a week long tour in the Wisconsin North Woods this coming August. I suppose I'll be spending my rebate money on that.

I probably won't get a "rebate" but my daughter might. I've wondered how I'd like eggbeater pedals; the cleats fit SPD shoes and performance has a pair for $40. Yesterday I ordered some bib tights. I only have two pair of tights and only one fits comfortably. Since I need them for commuting in 10F - 50F weather a second pair will help.

Seems to me that the last time there was a rebate like this it was election season as well. Funny that they did it again just now. Makes you go Hmmmmm. Republicans won as I recall.

Maybe I'll donate it to the American Civil Liberties Union or the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Took me a couple of days, since I don't often have to deal with windfalls. Then I remembered.

Garmin Edge 705. The 010-00555-40 model--with the HRM, Speed/Cadence & Data Card thingie. It should just about soak up the whole rebate.

Well, this (http://www.recumbentparts.com/main.html?c=10&k=699985468&b=1182568304&t=5^Accessoiries^1^&e=34) is what I'd really like to spend it for, but that would take my money to Europe which wouldn't do a dang thing for the economy. Every time I buy bikes or something for them, my wife tells me we need a new bed more. I keep telling her, "But dear, I can't ride that bed." She looks me straight in the eye and says, "Oh yes you can!" Maybe I'll just use the rebate for that new bed....

I think you have the wrong emoticon there DG. It should be a :) or a :D . Paying down debts is good. I spent a couple of years doing that, and bill paying became the highlight of my month because I could see progress and each month felt better. Keep it up! My bicycle was instrumental in doing that.

Part of ours will go to pay off a large and unexpected dental bill that wiped out my FSA balance. But, being loyal, patriotic citizens, we are going to use part of it to buy stuff. :p

Best movie line of all time. From "Mars Attacks" Quote: "They blew up Congress!"

Everyone inside the beltway has lost their minds. Stupid idea that by the time it is executed things will have changed and it will be added to the debt your grandkids are going to have to pay.

is what I'm going to be doing as well. With one dependent, I guess we'll be getting $1500 - that should at least make a small dent in the bills. I be glad when I can get to the stage Artkansas describes, where I can see progress each month; right now, there's not a lot of progress, since unexpected things keep coming up. Oh, well, what's life without some excitement, right?

I won't be getting a rebate ... but I am going to get another bike. Probably a trike ... a "Catrike Road" I think. Looking forward to warmer weather ... it's been a bad winter in Illinois.
