I'm looking for a photo of a the rear side of a Schwinn GT-510 RD. I think it is a version of the Huret Safety Allvit. It's on a 1980-ish ladies Schwinn, and is loose on the pivot point on the hanger resulting in a dangling chain. Looks like there is a plastic piece behind that housing that may be damaged, and the cage rotates forward and back easily. It should be still.

I have a GT510 that had a similar problem. The pivot on the hanger is supposed to be loose enough to move forward and backward but not side to side. If needed, the pivot can be tightened by adjusting the lock nut on the inside of the hanger, but it shouldn't be so tight that the derailleur can't pivot (obviously). Looks like the main chain tension spring is either disengaged, broken, or missing. Go to the Schwinn.com forums and do a search for GT500 and GT510. You will find detailed shop diagrams that will show exactly how the derailleur should be assembled. If the spring is there and intact (a rather large coil spring, hard to miss), check that the spring arm is engaged behind the tab that applies the tension to the cage. If that doesn't make sense, the shop diagrams will show where it fits.

BC,

While I don't have a picture, I have a few extra Allvit RDs. PM me your address and I'll drop you one in the mail on Monday.
