Folding Bikes - Cable Splitters

Has anyone experimented with cable splitters to ease wear and tear on cables when disassembling for suitcase?

They have been de-rigeur on separable Moulton bikes for a number of years so one must presume if you get the correctly functional components then they will not provide any problems.

Importantly, they work on a bare piece of cable so you must have a cable stop on the frame on both sides of the splitter. Doesn't need to be close by, but it does not work without.

There is a company who makes them I think the name is Da Vincci.
There might be differences from brand to brand.. or there might only be that one brand.

I don't think you can order them directly, but apparently they'll sell to LBS's. So you'd have to ask your local shop to order them in for you.

Work very well, no need for 2 cable stops in close proximity.

(Loosescrews has the sets for handlebar interchange, but the links above are for splitting cables to pack/fold a travel bike.) It doesn't say on the Loosescrews website, but the set that I got turned out to be Moneran Cycles Quid Pro Quos, which so far have worked pretty darn well for my application (see flatlander's link to sandsmachine.com above for info about different cable splitters).

Just keep in mind for any splitter you get, you'll need another set of cables to finish the job. And as Jur noted above, you need to split a section of bare cable without any cable housing.

daVince folks in Colorado are innovative and great to deal with. Their cable splitters are used on the majority of S&S equipped tandems. They are the 'gold standard' in cable splitters.

I agree with others that the daVinci ones are the best ones to get. There are two reasons for this:
1) They use two set screws instead of one
2) The shape is designed for a 8mm wrench. You shouldn't use a wrench to assemble them, but occasionally the aluminum oxidizes a bit and makes them stick. A wrench makes it a lot easier to take them apart.

I've used most of the splitters on the market, but the ones that I'd buy are the daVincis.
