Sorry for the lengthy post..........just like today's ride it turned out longer than I planned.
Some of you might recall my struggles with a hard lump or knot under one of my left sit bones. I continue to experiment to see if there's something I can do to continue to ride and not aggravate the condition that causes some serious pain in my legs and back. I'd really like for the darn thing to just go away.
I tried to not ride. How did that work? Not too good.........
I stayed off the bike for maybe two weeks and my wife said I was so irritable she begged me to go ride even though the knot was still there......
I tried a super thick and spongy saddle I had on another bike. It was so thick I had to drop my saddle several inches. How did that work? Not too good.
The thick saddle provided relief to the knot on the left side but created some serious pain in my right hip of all things. I tried to adjust the saddle several times but it just didn't seem to help. Plus I just didn't like riding while sitting on a sofa.
I came up with the idea of going back to my regular saddle but try some gel "inserts" under my sit bone. I was already using an old pair of gel shorts I bought a couple years ago to help with a similar issue on my right side. Okay go ahead and laugh......I bought a couple of Dr Scholls gel arch supports (for shoes) and wedged them between the outside of my shorts and under my tights under my sit bones on both sides. So gel shorts, gel inserts and sitting on a gel saddle. How did that work? Not too good......
I did a longer ride than I orginally planned to do today with the gel inserts. Surprisingly I didn't have any pain from the knot after riding for over two hours. So, I stopped at a store at about 40 miles just to take a break and check things out. I checked on the gel inserts and they weren't even where I had put them. They had slide out from under my sitbones and way were up the back of my butt!! And here I was thinking they were still there and helping with the pain relief..........
But.... I wasn't having any pain with the sit bone. When I put the saddle back on before the ride and made some minor adjustments to the height and moved it back a little. How did that work?
Apparently for at least for one ride it might have helped. Now I've got to figure out what's going on with the right hip.........
And while today I was a slug, stayed in the 39 probably way too much and really, really labored up the hills..... it really felt good to be out riding again.
