Cool ride today. It was supposed to rain so the wife stayed home in the warm bed. I figured on taking my MTB cause taking the DA hubs on my Cannondale inot the rain just wasn't going to happen. Figure the knobbies on the mtb would be good for the puddles and other debris on the rivertrail. 32 miles in the rain ought to be plenty so I dressed warm along with the water resistant windbreaker. I get out to the tail and it's a beauty of a day. A bit brreezy though. Oh well, a good workout.
I hop on the trail and 3 miles in I see a paceline of roadies hop on. They are about 200 yards ahead so I pick it up hoping to catch them. If I do, cool, if I don't oh well! I reel them in so I'm now about100 yards behind when 2 of the guys fall off. "I got you know suckuhs!", I'm thinking to myself. I reel them in even closer, only about 50 yards back now. Just as I think I'm going to get them, one of the other riders falls back and gives them a draft. Darn! I continue the chase but they pull away another 30 yards or so. SO I chased them for 13 miles but just couldn't quite catch 'em. Cool. My average on the way to the coast was 18.4 for 16 miles of flat trail. I'm happy as that's darn good in my book riding knobbies. Whether or not the guys knew or cared if I was chasing doesn't matter to me. These are my tools for training, chase a rabbit to the end, win or lose. I felt good after the hard effort so a short rest then I'll head back.
On the return I notice it's a bit more on the headwind side but I continue to work hard. I see a few others ahead so I set my targets and go for it! I pass a few which doesn't surprise me cause I don't mind the wind like so many other riders. One of the advantages of being a Clyde I guess. I pass a few then on to the next guy, I'm feeling good.
I pull up to a really fit looking roadie guy (nice bike BTW:D). He seems to be struggling into the wind so I just ride by with my usual 'how you doin?". He sees me then hops on my wheel after no response. I figure well maybe he's done 100 miles, I dunno! So I hold my steady pace while he rides my wheel eventhough I've given him one strike for not responding to my greet. He drafts me for about 3 minutes then swings around my left while accelerating. He looks back at me like, "you shouldn't be passing me on knobbies you fat basturd!"
I watch him pull away for about 30 seconds then slow. "That's strike 2, 3 and 4 skinny boy!" so I put the pedal to the metal and 'CLYDE HOOFED' his ***! Hey he deserved it!:p....I don't usually rub things in, but every 1/4 or so, I'd look back to see how far he had dropped. Myabe next time he won't disrespect us Clydes!:D
Ended up with 32 miles at 16.3 average on the knobbies.
Me and my knobbies during breaktime:rolleyes:
