I remember a while back you were surprised to hear of mountains in California.
I live 15 minutes from Newport Beach in Southern California (Orange County). I did a hill training ride yesterday and here are my photos:

Through Santiago Canyon - Mojeska Peak with snow (it's around 2500')

It was an awesome day to ride - we are between storms and the mountains are covered with snow!!!

Those are beauitful shots!
Thanks for the pictures. I went to high school in Huntington Beach, and my mother later lived very near the Santa Ana River trail, where I enjoyed taking my sons when they were gradeschoolers.

Just look at those hills- Ideal for getting the MTB out on. Climbs may be hard but If I had down hills that steep- I might be thinking about a Full suspension. Thats it- Next bike will be a Full suspension- so wait a few years before I can afford it.
Great pics- but with views like that- You are getting me interested in Going Offroad again. Especially after todays ride in the cold. At least if I was up in the Snow- there would be a reason for getting cold- but when I see sun- I see warmth.
Beautiful pics!!
Keep spreading the word... it really does snow here. There was a headline at CNN.com the other day called "This is southern CA??" that included pictures of snow from last week's storm. ARGH!!! This isn't southern Florida! We have ski areas! It's not all palm trees and beaches!!! One of my co-workers stayed with a relative last week who lives in the lower areas because the area where she lives was snowed in... truckers were forced to stop and couldn't get through. In southern California.

You'll have to visit DG. The Mission Hills trails are just a short ride away from where he lives, and now that he has his Peugeot.... ;)
Of course if you don't want to go so far, you could do worse than the Womble Trail (http://www.ouachitaadventures.com/Trails/Womble/womble.html) here in Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas.

Nice pics Pam. Looks like it was a nice day. We had beautiful weather here in Phoenix yesterday, but has been raining all day.
How high are the peaks in the distance?

Stapfam, normally I would be mountain biking but when it rains, trails are closed for 72 hours so on the road I went. Just as well, I did hill training and got in some great views. Weather was perfect, cool but sunny. If you check out the first and third photos, there are some great trails out there.

Pam nice pictures, I’m going to be down your way on Feb. 16th doing the Butterfield Double, opps I better send in my registration. I’ve done some riding in your area, the last time was the Amtrak Century, and there are hills in SoCal.

And I have done the Spooktacular a few times... there are hills in Bakersfield as well! ;)
Good luck on your Butterfield ride. Hope there's no rain this year!

Thanks for the info. I purchased a Nikon CoolPix L10, but it seems to lose a lot of depth perception. I used to use a 35mm slr, but I do like the small digital for pics during hiking and cycling.

We have our share of hills with some great long climbs.
I did it the year it was called the Butterflood and I finished it that day. I've never ridden in so much rain and mud.
Oh by the way, do you know what the BBBBC stands for on the back of the Spook jersey?

No I have always wondered... care to share?
I think we tried to make something up like "Bakersfield Bicycling Bosom Buddies Club" or something like that.
BTW - my spook jerseys (I have 4) are my favorites. They are becoming worn and threadbare, but I still love them!

Yes, if you are riding up into the mountains then we accept that you are experiencing cold and snow. But if you are staying in the lowlands, then we don't want to hear about how cold it is. :D

You're close…...Big, Beautiful, Buxom, Biker Chicks………No it stands for "Bakersfield Breakfast Beer and Biker Club". Dale and his friends had and unofficial club with this name. When he took over the Spook for the Kern Wheelmen he always included the initials, somewhere. He has been helping us with "The Lung Ride" (http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/home.jsp?id=1692) and somehow, we don't mind, they ended up on our jersey. The BBBBC is still around and it has a lot of neat people in it.

A Mtn biker surprised to hear there were mountains here? Isn't Mt Tam the "birthplace" of mountain biking?
Some nice shots I went to Plam Springs last week and was in the snow. Now i remember why I moved from Michigan.

I agree with you on snow being in the distance Pam. We had a dusting of snow in the mountains north of Phoenix from the storm on Monday. and it was 35 here this morning.
but, they say it will warm to 70 by Sat. That will be great for the club ride! :D

Wow - must be "global warming" if the temps in Ohio beat out AZ and CA!!!
This weekend it's suppose to be high 60's low 70's and no rain!!! No excuse - I have to get out and ride!

Problem is there are mountains and Mountains. Ones I like you can climb- The ones you like are Suicidal at the speed you go down them.
And Mt Tam could easily be in San Diego. America's a big place and too many places to visit.

So share with us please Pam, how you trained the snow to stay
in the distance. Here-abouts....the snow comes to us, and just
keeps on a-coming. I still can't stand up straight from trying
to clear the driveway last Saturday.
Nice Pics. I and my bride both use Canons and enjoy them
very much. Someday I hope to get as talented photographically
as you are.

Well you know us Californians... we rule the world and the seasons and weather are under our control!!!! Bru-Ha-Ha-Ha!
Nah, seriously how fortunate are we? In the same day, in a matter of a few hours I can go skiing, and then have a nice dinner at the beach watching the sun set over the waves (and I have done just that!). I just got done visiting St. Paul MN and wow, there was snow everywhere not just in the mountains where they belong - that sucked! (so did the 15 degrees below 0 weather! :(). I have no idea how you guys can work out in the cold and snow. But there are trade offs... generally I can ride year round only occasionally having to deal with rain or heat but... I pay a premium for housing (a big premium) and well, we have other problems here... For now I ride while I can, enjoy the gorgeous winter weather and dream of finding someplace when I retire where there are seasons (like where you are)!
Thanks for the compliment on the photography. No expert I but I try. It's the camera. I think the Canon's are great!

Stapf - you have only to come to California... we have everything! Surf, sand, the OC beaches and cities, mountains (big ones at that), beautiful back country, wine country, the sophistication of San Francisco, the awesome grandeur of Northern CA with the Redwoods and Sequoias, Yosemite... well you get the idea. It is a cyclist's paradise (although I would argue Utah is a very close second).

We are still having a never-ending arguement with Huntington Beach, CA in Santa Cruz, CA over who is the original Surf City. Between that, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and snow last week; we DO have everything all right- including being found out by League of American Bicyclists as being bike friendly. DRAT! Can't keep a secret...... ;)
One very good thing we have is a 500+ mile relief from San Diego :D

All these photos for me so I thought I would let you see some of the rides I have locally. All involve hills and all shots are taken within 10 miles from home. And we did have Snow a couple of years ago- 27th December 2005 to be exact.
That 2nd shot is of a fast downhill on chalk through the woods. Wet chalk so we only get to about 40mph max. And on the last shot into the sun- You can see the wind strength we have by the bushes on the right.

Gosh you so make me want to travel to England. It is beautiful country!!! I am jealous of your trails! When I get home tonight I'll see if I can find something to entice a visit to California!
