We're still a couple of months away from the snow disappearing from the ground, but I figured I'd ask anyways since I was just wondering about this today.

I am looking to do some longish (by rookie standards, at least) on weekends this upcoming spring and summer. I am planning on doing about 40ish on one day and 60-80ish the other day of the weekend. In addition, I love to play ultimate frisbee. Would it be advisable to do a 40+ mile ride followed by 2 hours of ultimate on a summer day? Should I give up hope on getting both activities in over a single day in the summer? I honestly love both activities and would love it if I can figure out a day to participate in both without killing myself.

thanks for any tips!

Let me give you a link to the UltraMarathon Cycling Association website, and a collection of Randonneuring website links, and my Links page:

My point ... if people can ride 400+ kilometers in a day (24 hours), I suspect you can ride 40 miles and then play ultimate frisbee.

If you're trying to follow a strict training schedule for some cycling event where your final time matters (i.e. a race), then it might be argued that the ultimate will hurt your recovery period from the morning ride.

If, on the other hand, you just want to have fun and enjoy life go and do them both.

The only thing you might want to be careful of is getting injured during ultimate due to tired leg muscles from the ride. If you do a hard ride in the morning your legs might have trouble holding up to cutting out on the ultimate field. But only you can probably tell what is reasonable caution based on your fitness, any previous injuries, your skill and how hard the ultimate games are (I've only played ultimate with coolers of beer opened on the sidelines but I know that others take the game much more seriously).
