After reading an artical in the Adventure Cycling Association magazine about this area I think I would like to ride there. Has anyone elseout there ridden this area? Any advice of what time of year to try it?

My rep is going to take a blow here, I've not cycled in this part of the state. I do know that Cycle Oregon has included this area and they would have information on their routes in that area. What you are looking for is highway 205 and the little town (?) of French Glen, that is where the loop ride starts.

Sorry, I'm riding more west of the Cascades.

Too bad, Steens Mountain sounds like an interesting place, especially as it has both wild horses and pronghorns :D .

Steen's is beautiful and best ridden, in my opinion, in the fall. Less bugs, cooler temps. i used to run at a cross country training camp (in Steens) in high school and have visited the area several times. Traffic is not so bad but make sure you fill up on gas and don't expect too much in the way of services.

I don't know the best area to road bike as my experience is limited to mt. biking on the Steen's mt. loop road, which is not suitable for anything resembling a road bike. It is way hot in the summer, lots of bugs and it does cool down a bit a night.
