Mountain Biking - This could very well be the end of me!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm debating buying a new fork! I just found a Marzocchi Z-1 Freeride with a QR-20 in RED for $300.00.
If I buy it, I think my wife is gonna kill me!
Ooooooohhhhhhhh what to do? Do I buy it and risk termination? Or do I pass?
BTW, it's a 2002 model, but still an incredible fork!
Oh yeah, figure I'll need X-tra heavy springs for it as well!
So, that means it's go up another $30.00.
The temptation is getting to be more than I can handle!
See if it were me, id buy them, but buy HER something too, as to "balance it out" seems to work ;)

a2psyklnut,
Just do what I did, ask her if you can buy it... if she says no then keep on saving and buy something better later. You might be surprised though; she could say "ok."
Does your wife ride bikes too? Maybe she wants to upgrade her shock to whatever you're currently using on your bike. If so, tell her she can have it when you get the Z-1, if not you could always sell your current fork and at least make some money back on the deal... (just be sure you have hubs that support the QR-20; but I'm sure you already knew that).

If your wife does not know much about bikes, you could always buy it, and put it on your bike when your wife isnt looking, and when/if she notices the new fork, just say somthing like, "yea I know its not a great fork, but It was on clearance at the LBS for $50"

Yep :D I own one and I am an unsmooth 250pnd freeride hack. Still works :)

Hell ya. This fork is very plush. You will want it a little stiff :)

There is nothing like having the shop write you out a "wife receipt"!!!

Go ride your bike, come home in a fit of rage, ranting, crying, carrying on about how your bikes trashed, you won't be able to ride, life's not worth living without your bike, etc. Then when she ask why, or she tries to console you tell her you will have to have a new fork and its almost $300.
If you pitch enough of a fit she tell you to go get your bike "fixed".
Hey, It works for me at least once a year. :)

Pay half of the $300 in cash and not let your wife know about it. Put the other half on the credit card and tell her you got the whole thing $150. She will see what a great deal it was and not be too mad. This only works at the LBS, as you can't pay on-line guys cash :(
I guess the Z-1 would replace your Psylo? Do you dislike the the Psylo?

Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness.

H.Star, the Psylo is solid, still a good fork, I just like the feel of Zokes better! I'll probably keep the Psylo and put it on my SS bike, then sell (sell, yeah right, more like give) the fork off of the SS to a buddy.
Not to sound like a sissy boy, but the color will match better too!
Oh, what to do, I'm about to order it, and already have buyer's remorse. I mean, fear of my significant other.

Buyer's remorse will come and go. A broken arm or a leg after a dispute with a significant othe will stay for a while!:D

Stop lying to yourself. you know you want it, just admit it. Everyone is doing it, why not you? Who wears the pants in this relationship, it doesnt look like you! Just buy it, think of it as a LONG TERM purchase. Its gonna last you a couple of years so why not just get it. It will work out in the long run. When are you going to see an opportunity like this ever again, its a once in a life time chance. ARe you going to sit there and wondering, "what if, what if i do buy it, what if i dont buy it". Instead of thinking about it, you could have bought it by now.
JUST BUY IT!!!

Who cares if you do or don't "wear the pants in your relationship." If this worries you so much then you probably shouldn't order it. Guilt is not a good thing...

Damn, they have them in stock!
Just ordered a set, plus a set of springs!
And, like a crazy fool that I am, I also ordered a set of wheels. Came with a QR20 Marz front hub and an XT rear, laced to a set of Rhino Lites!
Just spent almost $600! I hope she doesn't find out!

Question... is your current fork broke? Are you wheels taco'd? umm is this going to make you a faster rider/racer and make you famous? ummm I'd say wait, oh to late! No need to get the wife pissed and then make you're riding a living nightmare everytime you want to go out. Just a thought, but if your wife is cool (which she has to be to have married aa crazy fool like you) ;) then I'm sure it's all good
So tell us how it rides and how much you love it and all that shiet when you get it!

Hey everyone,
Actually my wife is VERY cool about me and my bike purchases. She rides too, so there is no putting anything past her. She'll definately notice the new forks. The new wheels will probably go unnoticed, but I'm sure she'll see the extra set in the garage. She understands me and the fact that this is my sport/hobby and knows it isn't a cheap one. She's just always concerned about finances, but we can afford this right now, so it's no biggie! I may also sell my Psylo to help offset the costs, but I don't know right now! I like having a lot of spare parts around.
Not to sound like a chauvinist pig, but I do make the money for the family and I'm in charge of the finances, and I wouldn't put us in financial difficult just for some new bike parts. Financial stress maybe, but not difficulty! j/k.
Plus, she's got some pretty nice bikes of her own!
And Sam, NO!, you can't have my truck! My wife likes driving it too much! Pretty funny actually, a little 5'6" thin blonde driving this big old crew cab dually 4x4!
And MsVicki, would your son be interested in a 1970 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 with a lift and 31" tires? I recently redid the drivetrain and installed front disc brakes and more heavy duty rear drum brakes. New axles, new drive shafts, new universal joints...etc. I was planning on restoring it completely, but may consider selling it!
Yep, my dad used to call me the Redneck-Surfer-Jock-Brain-Chameleon. I'm a big boy, grew up in the sticks, love the water, and get along with almost everyone!

Not yet, just ordered it yesterday (9-25-03), and they didn't have the X-tra Heavy springs in stock, so it'll be 3 or 4 days until they show up then another 5-8 days to send it all to me! I'll be happy if I get everything my mid-Oct. I'm not in any hurry, so I went with the cheapest shipping method!
Plus, YOU KNOW, I'll be posting some pics of the new set-up!

Shucks! I had to at least ask...
Back when I was rock climbing it was always the joke we would crack before a tough climb. "Hey if you fall and die can I have your gear?"
Betcha can't wait to bring it up to NC for some long fast downhills now!

We used to say the same thing back when I used to climb... looking back now though I think that might not have been such a good idea as it could've been the "gear" that caused the fall. I certainly wouldn't want it then... haha

Wow, this thread is awesome...The drama, suspense, and plot. Can he do it? Will he survive? What will the antagonist do when she finds out she's married to the protagonist. There is definitely more entertainment value here than almost anything on TV these days.
Do we have any independent film buffs here? 'Cause this would make a great movie.

I suck, I didn't take any last night. I will tonight though!
My garage was a complete and utter disaster, and it took me about 1.5 hrs just to clean up to the point where I could work on my bike.
I mounted the new wheels, but didn't get to the forks yet. I stripped one of the Torx bolts on my front rotor and had to drill it, and by the time I got everything cleaned up, it was pretty late!

a2psyklnut
10-07-03, 08:53 AM
I stipped it the usual way. Too much muscle too little patience!
Actually, I was using a torx bit on a ratching screwdriver thingy. I didn't have good leverage, and the damn thing stripped on me. Stripped a second one too, but not to the point where I couldn't get a good hold of it and get that one out.
Then I also put in some new pads in my Hayes Hydros, so I had to go through and alcohol the rotors really well, and sand the pads a bit! Didn't even get to test ride it, since I had the fork off the bike!
I also have to stop by the shop and get some more oil for my fork. I'm going to be replacing the stock springs for "Chunky Boy Springs" and will probabaly replace the oil as well. Or, maybe I'll just wait until the seals are broken in a bit and replace the oil at that time. Yeah, that's probably what I'll do so I can change the springs quickly and maybe go for a test ride tonight!
