Lately I've been forced into rest days by the weather, my arthritic knee, etc. I don't think I've ridden more than 5 days in a week since early January. But I seem to be getting stronger. I'm starting to realize the whole less is more thing, particularly @ age 50. That kinda sucks for a mileage junkie like me, but I'm starting to fully understand that if you want to race, knowing when not to ride might be the most important aspect of your training.
Much easier said than done for Pcad. I'll probably ride more between August and December after the race season winds down. Given all that the 12,000+ annual mileage totals may be history. I get more fun out of riding when I can hang with the fast guys. And beat a few of them to the line at the end of the ride or race. Those weenies aren't so fast after all. And I'm not so slow.
Well, OK, I'm still slow, but you get the drift.

Such are the delusions of Mileage Addiction. Is there a 12-Step Program for this?

Quality vs quantity my elder brother. I'm maintaining a five to eight hours per week training cycle. Every time I am on the bike is quality. From a performance standpoint the numbers and my perception say I've never been stronger.
The rest of the time I'm learning how to deal with the voices in my head telling me I have to do more...The up side, less Advil. The downside, more time to look for trouble in other impulsive desires.

You're old cr. I'm getting there. There's a difference. You surrendered. I will go kicking and screaming @ 33mph. Actually, 32.5 mph as I'm getting gapped. But not yet...not yet.
And of course I remain devilishly handsome, which is ample compensation.

If I remember right old geezer, you are older than I am. I am graceful about it - you are in mid-life crisis. :D

Do beat an addiction, you have to replace the undesirable behavior with an incompatible desirable behavior. New minor hobby? Wheel building? Doing you own wrenching?

Yes, resting is part of training.
The irony is that if I didn't race, I'd probably be riding a lot more. Hell, I may even attach a mirror to my helmet and wonder why I'm not losing any weight even though I ride a thousand miles a month... ;)
Anyways, proper nutrition is also part of training, so I would suggest trying your hand at preparing and cooking healthy meals for the week. Assembling and portioning ingredients for recovery smoothies and like is good too.
Oh yeah, you can catch up on your social life. If it wasn't for the off-days, I wouldn't have friends :(

I got faster when I started to train less. 16-20 hours a week on the bike was killing me. Now I ride 8-10 in the winter and 12-15 in the summer. I'm faster (rested) and feel better about riding.
With two kids under 3 in the house, my hours on the bike are used for specific training. No more rolling around at 17-18mph to get hours on the bike.

No.
Step 1: Stop recording mileage.
Step 2: There is no step 2.

A) It's highly likely you can't remember anything right at your age
B) You look 100 years older than me
C) There's nothing wrong with milking mid-life crisis for ten years or so, it's gotten me a nice motorcycle and some cool bike schwag so far
D) 'Graceful' is over-rated and actually a code word for Wussy
Now if I ever come to Costa Rica you ample reason to kick my ass.

I realize memory begins to go with age, but let's not forget to use our verbs.
Just think, more rest days means even more time to post on BF.

Oops and Correct. My apologies to CRTree for not insulting him in a grammatically correct fashion. This lapse was not due to early onset Alzheimer's, it was Lactic Acid Haze.
I shouldn't have ridden today. I know the feeling.

I'm not going to ride today; I'll run instead.
Running for meis a rest day from cycling, and yet, like cycling, it is a perfect distraction from things that are really important--like laundry or cleaning.
