just looking for some opinions on how to deal with being sick and training/getting off the bike. last week i was feeling a little sluggish but never the less kept with my training porgram to a tee. on thursday i had a good workout and ate dinner. leter that night i got really sick (throwing up and so on). missed work on friday which i never do. i lost about 6lbs from thursday to saturday. i only weigh 124 regularly and am almost 6' tall.so 6 lbs is alot for me. got back on the bike sunday for an hour and again today for an hour. all i can think about is sleep. my body feels weak right now and i am still down about 4lbs. is it best to stay off the bike completly for a little and just pick up where i left off my program or just reduce my hours until i feel better. logic tells me to stay right off the bike but what do i know?

You need rest until you're recovered. Stay off the bike.

Not that I have any basis for saying so.

Stay off completly. A week off your bike > Struggling thru unhealthy. Ya cant really get any intensity in anyway.

I would stay off the bike. If I miss just 2-4 days, I wouldn't skip a beat and just move on in my training. If I miss a week, I would go back a week.

Exactly, the training you're going to do will be crappy, and yet you won't be recovering either. Just wasted miles on the bike and you'll be less recovered than before.

I would say to keep riding but keep in under an hour a day and strictly in recovery zone, and only if you really want to ride.

Unscientific nonmedical opinion: Follow your logic. Get healthy 1st, like an honest 90-95% + of your pre-sickness "perceived wellness", then ride. Being off the bike for a week, 10 days or so in January will have no to minimal impact on your race season. Worst thing you can do is jump back in too soon, compromise your ability to recover from illness, not really get well/keep getting sick, then miss a couple/few weeks/month of training, then yer toast.

My thinking is this:
you need to rest and get back to trainable fitness as soon as possible. However, I think I differ in opinion from other forum members in that I believe small amounts of low-key exercise (which for an endurance trained person would be less than an hour/day at low intensity) will actually help you recover from illness faster than becoming a temporary couch potato.

Depends on the illness, but I agree. I always feel better if I can get out and do something. Helps clear your head, and all that jazz.

+1 on rest.
