I bought this old-old mountainbike frame from my LBS. After having it powdercoated and getting a bunch of hot new/used parts for it, I decided to make a single speed of it since it has horizontal dropouts. Also, the derailleur hanger is totaled. The frame had Stumpjumper stickers on it, but I'm not sure about that because I can't find any stumpjumpers on the internet that has a lugged frame as well as horizontal dropouts.
Anyway, I bought a slick wheelset on a budget, and went through with the purchase knowing the spacing on the hub was going to be 135 mm and that's waaay bigger than the bike's spacing. It turns out the difference in spacing is much more than minor, and in fact it's infuriatingly large. Jamming the wheel in forcefully gives me no control over chain tension, and it's just a huge hassle.
So, I figured that since this is a vintage mountainbike frame, I would post in this subject. The hub is a Deore with 9 speed freehub. I looked at a 7 speed freehub, but it will only make a 2 mm difference. Do I have any other low-budget options besides investing in another wheel? I'm hoping someone can just direct me to some elusive bicycle parts dealer that has a freehub that is much smaller than 7 speed and wont cost me a fortune - but I know my chances there.
